How to find a lost Word / Excel / PowerPoint document, opened from email (Hotmail or Outlook Web Access), that was edited and saved – but is now gone?

This is a long post that I hope will help a few desperate souls out there: how to find your lost Word, Excel or PowerPoint files?

Google “lost file opened from email attachment”, “rescue lost word doc” or “word document that I opened from my email did not save on my copmuter” and you can witness the misery of dozens (thousands? millions?) of poor computer users who lost their dissertations, school papers or theses after they emailed it to themselves, opened the document, and saved it – just to discover they can’t find the files they spent hours working on.

I want to smash my computerIt happened to me at least a few times and to my wife a few more.  Worst of all, none of the explanations on the web seem to actually work!  So for the sake of all you who accidentally ran into the same problem, read on (and if it helped, tell me in the comments).

I lost my Word / Excel /  other file after opening it from email

The scenario is always the same.  You:

  1. Opened a file from your webmail, typically using Internet Explorer.
  2. Made lots of changes and saved at least a few times.
  3. Closed Word or Excel.
  4. Tried to reopen the file but couldn’t find it.

Why it happens

This typically happens to users of Hotmail or Outlook Web Access (OWA), usually when you use Internet Explorer (especially versions earlier than IE9).  Google Chrome is built differently (and better in this case, in my opinion).

In Internet Explorer, when you click on an attachment you have two options: “open” and “save”.  If you clicked “save”, you’d be fine.  You will be able to save the file somewhere (e.g. on the desktop) and continue working.  The only way to lose the file is if you delete it or forgot where you saved it.  In any case you can just search for it.   In Chrome, any file you open is automatically downloaded and saved, too.

If you clicked, “open”, however, you’re entering zombie land.  Word will show you the document (maybe after a warning that you opened a downloaded file).  You will be able to edit and save the document regularly.  But little do you know that you’re saving the file in a “safe zone” (technically, a system folder) used for files downloaded from the web.   I call it zombie land because you have no idea that the files you’re saving will disappear the second you shut down Word.  Worst of all, because files are saved in this zombie land, you won’t be able to find these files when you search for them.

How to rescue the file you opened, saved and is now gone?

Luckily, there’s a way to rescue these files, especially if only a short time passed since you’ve opened and closed them.  Here are the instructions for Windows 7 or Windows Vista users, English version.

<disclaimer>  Please be careful and follow the instructions closely, as you can cause damage, too.  If you’re not sure what you’re doing, ask a friend to help. I’m just trying to help you but I can’t assume responsibility if something goes wrong… </disclaimer>

  1. Most importantly, do not try to re-open the file from your email.  If you have done so already, you may have overwritten your file.  You’ll know soon enough.
  2. Click Start (bottom left icon on your desktop) or on your keyboard’s Windows key.  If you don’t have a Start menu (e.g. if you’re using Windows 8), tap Windows logo key Picture of the Windows logo key+R.
  3. Your cursor should blink in the search bar.  Just copy and paste this line
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and tap Enter.   If this happened to you when using Firefox, please use this line instead: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\temp (Thanks to Paul who commented below for this tip!)This will open the special folder where temporary downloaded files are saved.  Annoyingly, Windows doesn’t show you this folder unless you manually type it.
  4. We now need to show the hidden system files where Windows saved your files.   Click Alt+T to show the Tools menu.  Click the fourth option, “Folders options”.
  5. You should now see the Folder Options dialog box.  At the top, choose the ‘View’ tab to see the Advanced Settings.  Under ‘Hidden files and folders’, choose the option ‘Show hidden files, folders and drives’.
  6. Underneath, un-check the box of the option ‘Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)’.  Approve the warning message by clicking ‘Yes’.  Don’t worry, we’ll put everything back to place later.  Click OK to close the dialog box.
  7. You should now see many more folders and icons.  Some will appear a bit transparent – that means they’re hidden files.
  8. The folder will contains many folders that have strange names like ANH4N2W1, etc.  Your files will be in one of them.  The easiest way to find the file is by sorting the list by ‘Date modified’ and opening each folder at a time.   Just click Alt+V to show the View menu, then choose Sort by, and ‘Date Modified’ and ‘Descending’ to show the latest files first.
  9. Double click to open each folder.  You’ll get an annoying warning message each time you do so, just approve it.
  10. When you open a folder, again sort it by ‘Date Modified’.  You can also sort by ‘Type’ to show your Microsoft Word files first.
  11. If you’re lucky, you’ll find your missing file in no time.  Just notice the file size – if it’s 1 KB you are probably looking at a temporary file created by Word and not at the file you saved.  Just copy the files you found to your desktop or to your My Documents folder.
  12. Check each folder until you find your file.  Jump up in the air and thank God if you have found what you’re looking for.  My sincerest sympathies if you couldn’t find it.
  13. When you’re done, you should return Windows to its normal state by hiding again the hidden folders.  In Explorer (the file browser window), just click again Alt+T, Folder Options, View tab, and check the box ‘Hide protected operation system files’ and choose the option ‘Don’t show hidden files, folders or drives’.

If it all worked for you, scroll to the bottom of this page and add your comment.  I’m so glad I could help.  Just remember to never, ever, click ‘open’.  Always save documents to the right folder before opening and editing them.   It’s safer and would save you trouble.   Or consider switching to Google Chrome or the latest version of Internet Explorer.   That’ll save you at least this sort of trouble.

  1. Thank you so much for this idiot-friendly guide; you have saved me from a sleepless night, a whole school load of furious colleagues and an angry Local Authority wondering how the assessment co-ordinator could ‘lose’ the assessment data!

Incidentally, I had to backtrack to locate my file as it wasn’t in the Content.IE5 folder but hiding under a rock elsewhere within the Temporary Internet Files. Within that folder I was able to search by date modified and up popped my, sensibly named (with date etc. & details of most recent modifications) document. I’m usually pretty good at ensuring I’ve saved downloaded attachments exactly where I want them, I’m not sure what happened this time.

    THANK YOU :-)

    1. Thanks very much for the help..I used the one for Firefox and found it straight after

    2. You just saved our day!!! May everything you desire in your life come true. May you sleep well at night knowing how much you are helping others sleep well too! Sincerely, Sharon and Pascal

    5. Hi Oded,
Can you help me with a similar issue but on Mac? I keep getting this message: ‘Macintosh HD:Users:(my ID):Downloads:JRI-Poland_NameFinder_v4-2:JRI-Poland_NameFinder.xlam’ could not be found.
I believe I downloaded an excel file from this genealogy site a while back and have been frustrated in not being able to rid of it for months.
      תודה

      Neil

    6. Hi Neil, I’m so sorry but I have no idea how to do this on a Mac. But luckily another commenter called Ruchi posted a comment in July. Here’s what they said to do:
Step 1: Show hidden files, go here for an explanation http://ianlunn.co.uk/articles/quickly-showhide-hidden-files-mac-os-x-mavericks/
      Step 2. Follow this breadcrumb in finder /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Office/Office 2011 AutoRecovery
That’s all! Wanted to come back and share with everyone! Good luck

    7. Thank you, you wonderful human being! I lost 3 hours of work on a research proposal due tomorrow, got it back!!

    8. WOW you are an amazing human! sending you lots of love for this! you have saved me from failing my entire degree!

    9. GOD bless you!!!!! I’ve nearly had a heart attack! I’ve been working on this excel file from 2am to 10 am and I was suppose to email it to my boss after I’ve closed it! I still feel about to faint… Thank you from my heart!!!

    10. THANK YOU!!!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!!! Last time this happened I had written a 9 page paper and even talked to my local GEEK Squad and they even connected to my computer and couldn’t find the file. I ended up re-writing the whole paper.

Today, I was critiquing another student’s paper and after spending time commenting on the 8 page paper, I was unable to find it to send back to them. That is when I found this information and wa-la! There it is!

I am so grateful that you posted this work-around solution!

    11. You just save my life. If I lost the spreadsheet I’ve been working for the last week, I would have hung myself! Your AMAZING!!!!!!! Thank you!!

    12. Hi! I opened my saved work from email and didn’t save it properly thinking it was saving like everybody else here, I sent the document I thought that had been saving all the work I had been doing to my email for a back up and I logged off forgot about it for about 4 hrs then checked my email to read through what I had written today and it had not saved D: the library is now closed till the morning and I’m worried I won’t be able to recover it because I have already opened it on my email on my phone and lap top? Also because it has been so many hours :( I was just wondering if u could give me some hope as I need a good sleep tonight! I’m a Dopey mare!!

    13. I was in tears. I worked on my Spreadsheet for two day and thought I lost all the information.
      thank you so very much

    14. Thankyou so much!!! I spent so long typing my paper and no other website helped! This was awesome!

    15. Thank you for your generosity of spirit in posting this – you just recovered 3 hours of my life and the final edit of my script. I’m so careful to work from storage devices and back ups usually – this one time I got caught by the self-emailed attachment and it looked like disaster. So grateful – BIG THANKS.

    16. ER MER GERD I was going NUTS trying to figure this out! You saved me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

    17. Amaaaaaaazing! Thank you so much. If only I’d come across this when I was doing my MSc – stressful times! It was so clear and well explained. Thanks again.

    18. actually what I did was pretty easy. But I don’t know weather it will work for all of you. after accessing temp folder I select the date modified. then it showed all what I did today. fortunately my word file was there.

Any how thanks a lot for letting me on correct path. thanks thanks i happy. if this didn’t work I had to type 20 pages of equations again.

    19. OMG!!! you’re a lifesaver! I was so disappointed when I thought I had lost all the typing I had just done for the last 2+ hours. Thanks a bunch!!

    20. Thanks for the guide, just saved me from 4 hours of lost work. almost lost my cool….

    21. Thank God

    23. OMG, I’m jumping up and down at 1AM thanking you and the good lord. I swear I can’t take much more stress and this almost pushed me over the edge,my whole research paper gone but thanks to your tips, It was lost but now it’s found!!
      Thank you

    24. Thank you so much! I’d spent ages trying to find out how to find the word document I’d spent hours revising. Finally advice that really worked! I did use a partial solution from elsewhere to get to the Content.IE5 file but could not find out how to get Windows Explorer to display the file it was hidden in. I could find out the name for the file it was using to save things in TODAY but could not see how I could find the file name it had saved my document in from yesterday. I was getting really stressed so thanks again! You have probably saved my marriage too as hubby was getting seriously annoyed with my rantings!!

    25. Thank you thank you thank you!!!! You saved me from losing a good 2 hours of work (with only a half hour til it was due!) God bless!

    26. OMG THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH YOU SAVED ME!!!! I’m sooooo glad I found this I actual love you as a person

    27. After initially thinking this hadn’t worked and about to give up I found my file!! Thank you mad panic is over I have my 9000 word report!!!

    28. You are a LIFE SAVER!! Thank you so much. I will never again open a file from an email instead of saving it.

    30. Thank you so much for this big time help…It really saved time n mental agony of working again on same thing..Thanks alot!!

  2. Many thanks for your help. Your guide would have been just what I needed, but I had clicked into the attachment again and accidently saved over it. At least your sensible input and thoughtful advice will be extremely helpful in the future.

    Best wishes to you.

  3. OMG thank you thank you thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!! you saved my life
    THANK YOU!

  4. THANK YOU!! My husband followed your directions and found my dissertation file that I accidently closed out of without saving.

  5. Thanks you for your clearing up matter, I lost a lot of material till I learned to save my files as you explained in your article.

  6. Life saver! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had read other suggestions of how to find the missing document but didn’t understand what to do – your explanation was straight forward and easy to follow. Thank you!

  7. Thank you so much for this valuable information! You definitely saved me from having to redo a whole presentation less than a day before it was due.

  8. I’ve been up all night doing this paper and searched on a few forums how to recover my paper that I was “saving.” I was just about to give up and start over when I ran across this link in one of the forums. I’m so glad I came here. You have saved me a day’s work. I don’t know how I could thank you enough.

  9. Unfortunately, I had already tried to re-open the file attached to the email (point one of what not to do), but will be super-careful to go for the ‘save’ option next time now that I understand about ‘zombie-land’. Thanks

  10. this is a fantastic resource! it didn’t work for me because i had already re-opened the file from my email and overwritten the file–REALLY wish I had found these instructions 1st since the first instruction #1 warns you about this. hopefully i’ll never make this mistake again, but i’ll know how to find the missing file if i do! THANKS!

  11. You saved a long day of data collection and writing for me. I was about to lose it after nothing on the web could help me locate my work, but this post actually alowed me to find the file I had saved hundreds of times today. I cannot thank you enough!!

  12. AMAZING!!!!!! Thank you so much for this posting. You saved my butt big time. I thought I was going to have to redo all my work. Your article was so easy to follow and I was able to recover my file. Crisis averted.

  13. hello, I tried this but it doesn’t work for me – is this because I am working over a VPN connection? My Outlook is open the same as it would be for work. Devastated to have lost 4 hours of work – I used to know in XP where to find the folders but Windows 7 holds no joy for me. Thanks!

    1. Hi Gen, The short answer is that I don’t know. The long answer is that I don’t think the VPN connection should affect where Outlook saves the files for you. The instructions should work for Windows 7 and a document opened via Outlook and Word. Really sorry if it doesn’t work – I can only imagine how upsetting losing your document could be. Best, Oded

  14. OMG I LOVE YOU!!!!!! Thank you so much, i just spent 5 hours on a document then i lost it, with your help i managed to locate it. Thank you so so much x x

  15. Greetings! Very useful advice in this particular article! It’s the little changes that produce the most important changes. Thanks a lot for sharing!

  16. SAVED my butt!!! I spent hours of work on a Final Paper worth 20% of my grade. I am working on my MBA, so they wouldn’t have cared what happened. In fact, they probably would have said “what would your supervisor say if this happened at work? It doesn’t make a difference if you miss your deadline.” I cannot thank you enough.

I told my boyfriend that I would kiss you if I could! Thank you.

I found this link at: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35317

They had the same steps…. EXCEPT they did not have me uncheck the box for hidden system files, and this is where I found it!

  17. This was really a great guide, thank you – even though I did not find my file. In my case, I edited an attachment but did not save it yet – and my computer crashed. Any hope in recovering an unsaved edited file opened from an attachment? If this had been a normally opened Word file, it would’ve been autosaved, and I would’ve found it next time I opened Word. Thanks a lot!

    1. Hi Silvia, do you auto-saving enabled on your Word? I suggest making sure it’s set to save automatically every 1 minute. You can access this via Tools -> Options (Alt+T, then O). If Word has saved your file, it should be available in one of these folders. Hope you find your file – I know how frustrating it must be to lose all the work you’ve done.

  18. After I originally left a comment I seem to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I receive 4 emails with the same comment. There has to be an easy method you can remove me from that service? Thanks a lot! http://www.rampilog.com

    1. Hi Tony, I have no idea- from the blog I can just see comments/replies, so I don’t know how to stop WordPress from sending you comments. So sorry.

  19. Thanks, Oded Ran. Yes, Word is set to autosave, and all my files that were opened from the hard drive (not from Outlook) were there when I rebooted after the crash. It was only the unsaved file opened from Outlook that was not there.

Related to this, I never see in my ‘recent documents’ any files that I open from Outlook – only files that I have saved. These two could go together.

In response to Tony’s comment – I checked the box too, and received only one email for each comment after mine. I will make sure I don’t check the box again with this post (which I was about to do before seeing a possible connection to multiple notifications). We’ll see what happens.

  20. I’ve got the same problem with GMAIL today. I opened a file from GMAIL on MS Word and edit and SAVE a few times, and then close. Next time, I try to find it, figure out it’s never been saved. GMAIL doesnt help anything with it, as I dont save/assign the file as Google Documents. But, your tips did help me find it out at last. So really thank you. You know, I’m a writer, imagine you put 3 hours concrete with emotions and write down many details for your story line, and save the file, next thing to know it’s not there ANYWHERE, you could be really frustrated, as what you wrote was emotional and cannot get that back to describe/write the same thing. So THANK YOU!

  21. Thank you soo much, you have saved the entirety of my speech!
I am one hell of a happy guy

thanks, i definitely recommend this site

  22. OMG!!!!!!!!! thanks for your help that i’m able to retrieve back my hours of data entries!! scumbag windows live mail program :/

  23. THANK you so much!!!! I found my file after shedding many tears and feeling the devastation…Now Im smiling, its like a miracle has happened!! thank you very much, once again :))

  24. You saved my life!!!!! I had spent 8 hours entering receipts from a big registration project and thought all was lost. I was able to recover all 3 of my documents by using the steps you had above. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  25. You just saved me from either crying myself to sleep tonight or throwing my laptop out the window! I don’t know you, but I want to hug you!! I’m pretty computer savvy and can typically find these files when they disappear into limbo world, but this has saved me much grief! THANK YOU is not enough

  26. THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH
I thought i’d lost all my coursework that i’d started from scratch and spend 6 hours doing and i was in floods of tears and everything and now i am SO RELIEVED
    THANK YOU
    SERIOUSLY
    SO MUCH!

  27. Finally a post online that actually works! You save my partner many hours redoing her work, and you saved me a sleepless and restless night sleep too! Thanks Oded Ran

  28. Thanks for this post – I was one of the ones who re-opened the file and saved over the top of the one that I had worked on :-( but thanks for the info – was great to know how to look – definitely won’t put myself into this position again – will save before working on a document!!!

  29. I love you. You just saved my life, I love you so muchhh
p.s. i dunno if it’s only my computer but instead of doing all the date modifying stuff there was a search bar and i just typed “.doc” and i got my file; saved me the hassle of searching through all the files.

  30. You are a genius! You’ve added years to my life! I’ve made this mistake before but was never able to recover the files until today.

  31. Thank you so much for this helpful info. I lost my document after spending hours working on it and assumed I never saved since I couldn’t find it so I did it all over again only to not find it again. I was ready to scream until I found this very helpful info that worked great!

  32. OMG!!! Thank you so much. My wife was in tears on losing a days work with a timeline due today! Her IT department said it could not be done…Never say never!! Thanks again!

  33. Thanks for your article mate!
Was working on a complex financial bid and made the silly mistake of not checking whether the file had downloaded complete and clicked on open (in the assumption it was Open link post download of a file.
Worked for hours, religiously saved it too. Entered the final numbers in the proposal, saved everything, and quit!
Now when I tried to find the excel sheet…the workings…realized…it was not there!
Thanks to your article was able to find it and save hours!
    Thanks

  34. OMG! YOU ARE A GOD SENT! I WORKED ON MY FINAL PAPER ALL NIGHT AND NEVER CLICKED SAVE TO COMPUTER, I’M WORKING BETWEEN TWO COMPUTERS AND ONLY OPENED FILE AND DIDNT SAVE TO HARD DRIVE…YEAH THANKS TO YOU I DONT HAVE TO REDO!! IM FAV THIS WEBSITE!!

  35. Thank you thank you! I worked all night on my final term paper and never saved it to hard drive from an attachment, i kept saving it or hitting the save button but once i closed it out, it was G.O.N.E.! lol glad i found this website, it saved me alot of time and frustration!

  36. Thanks a million! This happened to me before and had to redo my work. But this time came across your post and it really worked. To view the hidden files had to click “Organise” button, “Folder and Search Options” and click on the 2nd tab “View” and then got the options you mentioned. That of course was an absolute no-brainer compared to finding the location of the folders on which you guided perfectly. I opened my file using OWA in Internet Explorer 9. Wonder why Microsoft does this to us without giving us an option to locate the file – seems the problem is widespread. Thanks once more for your help.

    1. Lucas, I’m glad I was able to help. It’s so frustrating to hear that even with IE9 this issue still exists. I’ve switched to Google Chrome some time ago and never looked back.

  37. OMG, OMG, OMG, I am jumping with joy. You just saved me 7 hours work on my dissertation! Thank you so so so much.

  38. Thank you so much for this post! It has saved myself (and many others) tremendously! Hopefully people who have the same problem find this site easily, as there are many other websites which will tell you that the document is unrecoverable.
    Thankyou again

  39. You just made me the happiest girl. Thank you so much for this tutorial – this is information that needs to be known to alllll!!! :)

  40. Wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to provide precise concise instructions on recovering a saved file opened from email …. I found my lost file within 5 minutes of finding your notes! I’d spent an hour looking for such guidance! Thanks again

  41. I have a problem with IE8 and Word attachments from webmail such as gmail or yahoo. If I Save the file and then try to open it I get the message something like Word cannot open the file. (implies that it may need to be restored or something).

I support the public computers in a county library system and have gotten lots of reports on this. Generally using Chrome or Firefox works, but I really would like a fix for IE.

  42. I just tried it, but it came up almost immediately “no items match your search”. So then I told it to search again on “computer”. It took a very long time, but again it came up “no items match your search”. I have Windows 7 and IE9.

  43. OMG, you saved my life today!! Your article is the best thing that has happened to me ever, saved me from tons of frustration and a whole day’s worth of work. Simply put, Simply Supeeerrrbbb!! Can’t thank you enough!!!!!

  44. OMG…. complete melt down, cant believe i am so dumb!!!!! i tried EVERYTHING before i managed to come across your TRULY LIFE SAVING pgae!!! easily simple and it WORKED yah ….. essay thats due tomorrow !!!your like a demo god hahahaha…
cant believe this is only a hotmail prob, you would think they would amend this somehow???

  45. You have just saved my PhD proposal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I was in tears, I was a mess, i was retyping 5hrs work and the deadline was 2 hours ago. I had to send my crappy unedited draft copy with apologies but I have just been able to send my finished paper only 2 hours late and hopefully (fingers crossed) it won’t be a problem. I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  46. omg. I’m here to tell you that Gmail absolutely does this too! I have lost files in the past but unfortunately my searches did not bring me to this article so they went unrecovered. errrg. However, when I lost my file last night after several hours of work I was so distressed! I’m on severe time constraint to tech review a book…every hour is precious! Finding this article gave me a glimmer of hope. After searching file after file after file with no success, I was about to give up…then I decided to search the files in the scroll box on the left side of the window…just in case. And just when I was about to give up, there it was…in it’s entirety…with all the work I had done. Thank you.thank you.thank you. And thank you! Who can I hug???

  47. You have saved me many tears. I was so proud of the work I had achieved tonight, and thanks to you I have been able to restore the file (and potentially my sanity!)

    Thanks again.

  48. I could not be more relieved!!!!! Thank you! I did make the mistake of reopening my file, but there were about 8 different version in the temp files . . . one of which I needed. THANKS!

  49. anyway you can help – after i enter %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

in the search box that says “all or part of the file name:” i get the following error message:
C:\Documents and Settings\a483714\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temorary Internet Files refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. CHeck to make sure the disk is propoerly inserted…

Please please please help, I’ll do anything!

    1. Hi Karthik, You can try and replace the %userprofile% with something like c:\users\XXXXX where XXXXX is your Windows username. If you don’t know it, then try clicking the Windows button and ‘L’, then you’ll see it. So the entire like would look like this: c:\users\yourname\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 I hope that helps!

  50. Life saver!!!! Thank you so much for helping me out. I wish you could explain everything to me in this way! You complete star

  51. guess i’m the only hopeless one. Still getting the same message as before using my username as the XXXX. Time to give up?

  52. I love you dude. You just saved me so much double work. Thank you for being a kind soul and posting this for idiots like me. Much love and respect. Thanks again

  53. Brilliant – you have saved my son a lot of re-work. I find it incredible that this problem is still around – I have been falling foul of this for years. It is also amazing that your blog was the only place where I could find a reliable remedy – thank you so much!

  54. I was looking for an excel document that I opened via an accounting online program (Xero accounting). I edited the document and when I closed the doc I saved. I thought I will be given the option to chose the location, but not so. And I could not find it anywere! I could not find any hidden excel documents, but in the Search block above the Windows icon, I could see the Temp Internet files when I pasted this %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\ (without the Content.IE5) inside the block. However the excel files was totally different names, but copied and paste each one in a new folder and I found my file! Thank you it helped al lot!!!

  55. YAY!!! Thank you, thank you so much. This helped me find the homework assignment I worked my butt off on. Your instructions were perfect. Thanks again

  56. Thank you! I unfortunately opened the file from my e-mail and it was overwritten, but thank you for this information!

  57. This worked for me eventhough I had reopened the original e-mail file in Windows Mail. The file I had worked on yesterday ended up in a different folder than the file opened today. Thank goodness – this saved me hours!! I’m saving this link, but hoping I won’t need it again :-)

  58. Thanks a bunch dude. I had just done hours of homework that I had started on a different computer and I was about to get really pissed. lol

  59. I am so happy I could cry. I spent 4 hours into the early hours amending a document which I then closed without saving and with only massive thanks to you, you have saved me staying up the rest of what is left of the night re-doing it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  60. OMG, your article saved me from going crazy! I had lost a whole day of work and of all the helpful suggestions, your instructions were the only one that were easy to follow and that helped me find the lost file. You are a genius!!

  61. Thank you for making it easy to follow. Six hours recovered. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Stoopid Microsoft. Why have they not plugged this hole?

  62. I love you. Really. Thank you for posting! One thing I had to do was be sure to be logged into the computer under the user name (profile) when the document ‘disappeared’. In my previous attempts (before reading your post) I had logged in under Administrator… this did not work. I totally see why now, but in my altered state while frantically looking for my precious document, I wasn’t thinking clearly. Again thank you!

  63. Wow you are THE BEST! I had a 4 page paper due tomorrow and I literally found it right away following your steps. Thank you SO much for taking the time to write these steps out… I would have never figured this out. I wish there was some way I could repay you back because this saved me from turning in a late paper since I didn’t have to re-do it. I am SO glad I found your instructions on the internet. You are the best!

  64. You have no idea how much I love you right now! I was just having a complete and utter meltdown over an important document that I spent ages on! I am normally so careful about saving before editing (I am a teacher and always teach my students the importance of doing this!) but I guess tonight I was just so busy that I forgot! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can now stop crying and go to bed! :)

  65. Thank you – this was truly helpful. Since I was using outlook above path in search did not locate my file. Not sure if it’s any simpler- but this what I did.
    1. Open any other word attachment from email- click save
    2. Insert header or footer
    3. In header or footer insert file path (it’s in “Quick Parts/Fields”)
    4. Step four will show you hard drive location for files opened from emails
    5. Search full path in Start/Run…open the folder and follow the steps oulined by Oded

  66. OMG…you are awesome!!!! I was in tears! I thought i had lost a 37 page power point presentation….thanks to you I just found it!!! thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

  67. Thank you, it is really a life saver, when it comes to documents which you have worked out for hours and saved on email attachment.

  68. I was so upset when I couldn’t find my finally finished paper for class, I tried so many suggestions from different websites but nothing worked. I was sobbing when I ran across this site and decided to try one last time. When I found it I was in complete shock and so relieved.Thankyou so much!!!! I’m never making this mistake again!!! Thanks again! =)

    1. GMAIL is NOT immune to this problem! I have been a victim of this unfortunate calamity at least 2 or 3 times using GMAIL over the last few years. Perhaps the only solution will be to scream about it until programmers develop a safety feature giving direction to the user to prevent loss of the files opened from email. What a remarkable oversight!

  69. I love you!!!! You have actually saved my life and given me a weekend with my children back!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. Just lost my sons homework after assuring him I would print it safely… thank god I did not have to re do it… you are a truly wonderful person… Thank you very much!!!

  71. You have no idea what a relief this was to find your instructions – so easy to use and it worked. Twenty-five agonizing minutes of thinking I’d lose my mind in re-creating an important work document; three minutes to restore it. You are my hero.

  72. Thank you so, so much!! I couldn’t believe I lost my essay, but now I’m the happiest person on Earth!!!!! You’re the best!

  73. You are a genius!!! Thank you so much. I though I had lost about 3 hours of work on a very important college assignment.

  74. I made this stupid mistake and I cannot even begin to thank you enough. I would have lost 3 hours of work – I was literally in tears. THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVE YOU

  75. This happened to me on my work computer and this solution doesn’t seem to get me where I need to be on the drive. On my work computer is a bunch of different O: drives. Would this effect where the file is located? I’ve tried copying and pasting the location into the search bar, but it just keeps showing up as “error” or it goes to a place with nothing in it.

  76. Thank you so much for this!!! You are an absolute genius!!! I have been working on something for hours, and up until midnight, and was about to lose the will to live when I thought I’d have to start over! You’re a computer legend. x

  77. In a follow up to my previous comment, it seems like I can get to the temporary files folder – I just can’t get to the list of all those folders with the weird names. Can anyone tell me why this is or how I can get there? Once I get there, I will most likely be able to locate my document, but for now, it remains lost somewhere in zombieland.

  78. Thank you SOOOO Much! I was working on a paper for over 4 hours when I stupidly closed the file without saving it…I don’t think i’ve ever done that before but this is my last class before I graduate and I’m anxious to get it over with. You saved me hours of work! You’re a life saver!

  79. … If only I had found this page sooner. I was just on the phone with my gf and she had this similar problem with the OWA and she told me she lost the file. I did not believe it was possible and having had a similar experience with gmail where I was simply able to locate the file, I told her to download and open the file again, click “save as” and see what location it prompts. But it didn’t work and I told her to try it again and this time just save the file like she previously did, then download AGAIN and open and “save as”, just to make sure that SURELY the recently saved file would be there this time around, and it wasn’t… I was completely baffled so I decided to google some more… Until I came across your page and read the first instruction and thought to myself “Oh no what did I just make her do…!! :O” Thanks for the instructions anyway!! :)

  80. I can not begin to tell you how thankful I am for your taking the time to post this help. I was a victim of my own stupidity, as I opened my document from a yahoo email – spent hours citing my sources, and rewriting the paper. Only to click save, close… and lose the document. I searched for over an hour on the internet for help – which included one set of advice telling me to reopen from my email to see if I could find the temporary location settings there. I had just a shred of hope left when I your post. I carefully opened each file, one by one… praying to find my research paper. Low and behold, IT WAS THERE! Complete with all my changes and revisions. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You have no idea how much it means to me that you took time out of your day to make an “idiot guide” to help technically challenged people like myself. May God Bless You, my friend. You are wonderful!!! ~Jenn

  81. OMG!!!!!
It worked and I had spent two hours on the phone with Microsoft and my internet email provider and fiddling myself. WOW. Thanks. BTW, I never did save the lost MS WORD document, I just closed it and it appeared to be gone for good!

    THANKSSSSSSSSSSSS a MILLION$$

  82. My midterm project was finished and due in about 6 years. I finished it, closed it, and went to submit it online only to see it is not there. So first and foremost I googled how to get it back, I came across multiple sites with multiple different solutions none of which worked… until this one!!! I can’t possibly tell you how grateful I am. Losing a word document doesn’t seem like such a big deal until you’re in grad school, it’s due in 6 hours, and you’ve just finished after you’ve been working on it for weeks (I was so happy to find it that I legitimately cried).
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

  83. Add another one to your list of grateful admirers… This one was more than two days work! You will not be forgotten

  84. hi, i just wanted to let you know you have just saved my life. hours of tears, trauma and absolute despair, and i was just about to give up …but your post did the trick. I am so unbelievably grateful and will be bookmarking this page. THANK YOU so so so much!

  85. You are an absolute star! GCSE student daughter in complete meltdown having ‘lost’ several hours’ work. Thanks to you, I found it and am now ‘SuperTechyGeekMum’!!
    A million times thank you!

    Susan & Beth x

  86. Great article… any suggestion on why a document wouldn’t be in here? :-( It’s the exact senerio you describe (opened in windows live hotmail).. the file is a word file. Would the file be a word file with the same name?
    Many thanks
    Jo

  87. LOST – 5 hours cursing, searching blindly and retyping a short but important document from memory
GAINED a sparkling, valuable piece of knowledge that no doubt will escape me next time (if!) but at least I have learned that it can be done!
Brilliant, thanks for posting this you should knighted or sainted or something :) Chris

  88. I punched the air and thank you – after searching for over an hour in temporary internet files (I knew it was in there) your instructions took me straight to it! Thank you!!!!!

  89. I try this & i still could not find this! I downloaded some coursework to modify via hotmail as a “zip”. I then went to work on it & clicked the save button a number of times & even manually, a message came up saying “this document is a read only one or something.. but you came save it if you change the name” So i did by simply writing “complete” next too the original title. I follow these steps & i still cant find it anywhere! Uhm…help?

  90. I was literally bawling half an hour ago and you saved my lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Thnk you soooo much!!!!!!! I appreciate it

  91. OMG!!! Thank you so much! I cried for like 20minutes after working on an admission’s essay for hours and it didn’t save!! But it’s recovered and I’m happy lol. Thank God.

  92. You are a miracle worker. I read through so many other “help” blogs and found them… well, unhelpful. But this one rocked! I found what I needed and I did in fact jump in the air and thank God. Thank you so much for the idiot proof assistance. You’re the best!

  93. Oh wow! I think this tip (which worked by the way) postponed my grad school related mental breakdown just a bit longer. Thank you so much!

  94. Thank you… I’ve never had a more helpful piece of forum advice… You are going to good place when you die! ;-)

  95. I’m an idot and am so terrible with computers. Can you please help? When I click ctrl Alt T it won’t open the tools box

  96. omg. you saved my life. I was just crying and so frustrated and your instructions worked and I got my work back. WOW! YOU ROCK!!!!!

  97. I have just done this & it worked brilliantly! Thank you so much, i thought i had just lost a mornings worth of work!

  98. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! You have saved me from many sleepless nights and this really detailed step by step guide was the only one that worked or that I actually understood :D I spent all day on it and throughout the day kept clicking save thinking it had saved and their was no problem. It turns out as I had been opening it from my email it kept saving it I dont know where, and when i came to open it it was gone. I had a breakdown and did not know what to do. Thank you soooo much, you are a saviour and I hope you have a very good life

  99. PRAISE THE LORD, PRAIS THE LORD. YOU ARE A GODSEND. I PRAY ABUNDANT BLESSINGS ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY—–NOW!!!!!!
Forgive the caps but I am shouting it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :-)
I am already two day and 20% pentalty behind with this project being worth 50% of my grade on this 14 page project.
So this was not small thing you’ve done.
    GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  100. Dude you are a life saver! After editing a document for hours we found out that it was no where to be found. Thank you so much!

  101. I encountered this problem but unfortunately I still have windows XP. does anyone know of a way that I can get my document back with XP?

  102. Thank you so much Oded Ran. I was sure all of my hard work was lost. It looked like it was saving but alas it was no where to be found…but by following your easy steps I found my document and recovered it. Thank you! Thank you! I wish all “tech-support” and trouble shooting help was as great as you!

  103. Thank you sooooo much, I was already in tears. I lost my part of the group project and with your web page and detail steps I was able to find the file. Thank you very much God Bless you a million times over.

  104. THANK YOU SO MUCH….YOU SAVED MY LIFE…A STORY I HAD TO SUBMIT TO A MAGAZINE BY TOMORROW MORNING!!!! I THOUGHT IT WAS LOST.

  105. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! I just spent 3 hours editing a paper and when i thought i lost it, i almost had a mental breakdown.

  106. You know, my friend who I don’t even know, you saved me (and hundreds of consumers who were in a worksheet and needed urgent outbound calls) much aggravation.

There are probably a million entries on the web for people who have had this annoying problem, all with ridiculous answers from ‘helpful’ types, like, ‘Use a MAC’, or ‘You should have saved it more often’, or whatever.

Your simple, concise and more importantly highly accurate step by step guide worked perfectly and I thank you.

    Tom

  107. I didn’t think to save a file I opened from my hotmail/live account and “lost” 3 hours worth of homework for my MBA program…we’re talking 5 pages of math and calculations that I thought might kill me to have to do, again. Thank you for your expertise, my first drink of the night will be a toast to you…
    Thanks, again
    Maya

  108. You are a blessing from God!!! I am working on my Masters Action Research and I saved the generic way and thought I lost my file. I have lost many files in the past. However this one is really important. I am very grateful and I can not thank God enough for sending me you… I have not slept due to completing this research all day and its 5 am right now. You have blessed me tremendously. Thank you!

  109. You just saved me from throwing my laptop through the window! I’ve been working o this document for hours and I stupidly opened it up from a hotmail attachment and I seemed to have saved it into thin air. I can’t thank you enough for this guide to recovering the document, as to be honest, I was quite sceptical as these things never seem to help! But I’m so glad I found one that did. Thank you so much for putting this up! Your a legend :)

  110. You rock! And just saved me tons of time. I did the same thing last week, never found it and ended up rebuilding it. This time I was determined to find a way to get the file – you’re my savior!

  111. You just saved me as well. Thank you!!!! I thought I was done for! :) I will be printing and saving this website as a bookmark and a PDF. LOL….Can never be too careful. :)

  112. OMG!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! I ran into 5 sites before yours, all telling me to do different things, and none of them worked. Yours worked beautifully! I am so happy right now!!!! Haha!

  113. An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a coworker who had been doing a little research on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast simply because I stumbled upon it for him… lol. So allow me to reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending some time to discuss this topic here on your internet site.

  114. This is the right site for anyone who really wants to understand this topic. You know so much its almost tough to argue with you (not that I really will need to…HaHa). You definitely put a fresh spin on a topic which has been written about for decades. Excellent stuff, just great!

  115. Thank you so much for this wonderful post! Will not have been able to recovered hours of efforts without your help. GREAT knowledge. Thank you, thank you and thank you!

  116. AMAZING!!!! jumping up and down. After the office assistant and tech support guy in our office were out of ideas, we found this article. You saved my brief on a Friday afternoon due for filing on Monday.

  117. 21 year old college student here. I KNOW better than to not save an email attachment before editing, but we’ll chalk it up to lack of sleep… Thank you so much for the clear, concise and most importantly WORKING instructions. You have saved a lab report today.

  118. Thank you very much, I just followed your instructions and succeed to find a file in a computer’s friend that she thought was lost with the effort of a whole day.

  119. An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a friend who had been conducting a little research on this. And he in fact bought me lunch simply because I discovered it for him… lol. So allow me to reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending time to talk about this topic here on your site.

  120. Just saved my business school application essays and a whole lot of heartburn – thank you so much for your assistance!

  121. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. OH. MY. GOD.

I now HATE microsoft word. But thank you. I found it. You’re doing more good than those in washington!

  122. Thank you for sharing this, kind sir. I am so releived, I almost threw this laptop across the room when I realized what I’ve done!

  123. Hi Oded Ran, Great tip but I don’t see a Content.IE5 folder anywhere on my Windows 7 laptop within the Temporary Internet Files folder. Am I doing something wrong?

  124. Hi again Oded,

Update on my previous post. In between your steps 7 and 8, I copied the entire Temporary Internet Files folder to another location, and as if by magic, the Content.IE5 folders then appeared. I found my document within a couple of minutes!

Huge gratitude and respect !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

  125. THANK YOU sooooooOOOOOOO much!!!! Words cannot described how much u helped me!!! I was shedding tears and so upset. U are the freaking bet!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

  129. I opened a doc from outlook and put on like 6 hours of work and I lost it.
    I cannot thank you enough.

The files open in out look will be in the following location
    C:\Users\user_data\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\

  130. yep saved me too.
    Thanks alot!

    Who would of thought that:

    “Show hidden files”

    Meant:

“Show hardly any of the files that are hidden”

    And that:

“Hide protected operating system files ”

    Meant:

“Un-tick if you want to view the rest of the hidden files, that you meant to see when you clicked the first box”

  131. Thank you for your contribution that clearly saved the day of many of us !

Well, I am in the same situation as yarrow (6th november comment)… Anyone found out how to do the same magic trick under Windows XP ? What is the path to go ?

Any help would be very much appreciated ! Too bad they did not somehow prevent users from editing attachments.

    Have a nice day

  132. Phew… just found out how to do it under XP… YIIPPEE! Well, this worked for me, so cautiously check for yourself whether that works also for you. The path to enter in the address field of your explorer window looks like:

    C:\Documents and Settings\$yourusername$\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

where $yourusername$ should look more or less like your login in XP.

One (maybe risky) way to find out the path is to click on *another* attached file in your webmail application. Then select the feared “Open” instead of “Save”, which should open Word if it is a doc file. Then select in the Word menu “File/Save As…”. It should propose you to save this other document in the hidden folder ith a random name. Now, you just have to roll down the path leading to this hidden folder. It should look like what I pasted above.

The very clear instructions given to you by Mr Oded Ran should now apply within this Content.IE5 folder. One just “devilish” thing is that the Content.IE5 stays invisible within the “Temporary Internet Files” folder, even if you choose to show all hidden files and folders in the Display Options of Explorer. You can access it only by typing the right path in the address bar!

Once again, many thanks to you Mr Oded Ran. Your example gave me enough courage to search for the solution under XP!

    1. Thanks to both Oded Ran for the original post and Mo for adding the bits around Windows XP. Document found and hours of work recovered.

  133. Thankyou so much you just saved another whole nights work! Glad i took the time to read your blog. Couldn’t find a solution anywhere else but knew it had to be on my pc somwhere. Thanks again!

  137. You are the best! I too had to look in my temporary internet files and search through (I could not find it in the folder you stated above) but I did find it in the end and I’m SO glad I did. Thanks!!

  138. OMG!!!! THANK YOU SOO MUCH! I JUST HAD LOST MY UPDATED BILL REPORT FOR MY JOB! AND JUST FOUND IT! THANK YOU SOO MUCH!

  139. What a BABE. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more useful and life-saving Internet post. Massive ditto on what everyone above says. I shall be sharing this with a gazillion others. Legend xxx

  140. Oh my lord jesus christ i probably jumped in the air for a good 5 minutes. THANK YOU SO MUCH, YOU ARE GOD LIKE! i could kiss you

  141. You are a life saver! THANK YOU!!!!!! My partner and I finished 4 hours worth of edits on an essay for our business law class earlier this afternoon, only to find the document had vanished. If it weren’t for your clear, accurate, step-by-step instructions, I would still be in tears AND without a complete essay to hand in tomorrow morning.

Good karma is headed your way (along with some virtual blown kisses from us).

    Thank you :D

  142. You are amazing! I hade an important uni assignment due and then could not locate my finished product THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

  143. OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!! You are my hero! I had been directed by my dad to look for them here but he left off the Content.IE5 bit. Had just started to type my report comments again (in floods of tears!) and thought I would do one more google search and thank God I did. YOU ARE AMAZING!

  144. I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! Oh my god, I can’t even express how relieved and happy I am right now. YOU’RE A LEGEND!

  146. You said a number of times that this doesn’t happen with GMail but I am telling you it does. It happened to me but you saved all my work. Amazing. Thank you.Thank You thank you./

  147. Oh my gosh THANK YOU!! I lost my paper last night and was completely miserable as I tried to find it, and then as it became hopeless, I was trying to re-write it in the late hours of the night. But I thought I’d quickly try to find it again today, came across this, and I am just THRILLED that it’s worked!! I found the document!!! Thank you SO SO very much! You’ve saved me many hours of bitter writing! I’ll be sure to pass this info along!!! Thank you!!!!!!! :)

  148. Just found this after doing a Google. My son saved 2 hrs worth of work on his PC which was part of a Hotmail attachment and couldn’t find it. Thanks to you, after following your instructions I managed to find all the work again for him. Many thanks from us both.

  149. there were no folders when i opened the temporary folders file after i checked/unchecked the boxes you said! what may i have done wrong?

  150. This saved my final composer paper for my final in my music theory class! THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH! Without this I probably would have failed!

  151. thankyou so much! after searching for ages for a fix i finally found this website and your fix worked. I cannot thank you enough!

  152. Hi Mrs Marsden,

Were you actually in the “Content.IE5” folder, when you looked for the hidden folders (with random names such as “14NKXDP8”)?

As Mr Oded Ran and I have mentioned, the “Content.IE5” folder is located in a “Temporary Internet Files” folder (the location of “Temporary Internet Files” depends on whether your system is Windows Vista or XP). However, the “Content.IE5” folder is completely invisible within the “Temporary Internet Files” folder, even if you check the box to display hidden files and folders. The only way to access the “Content.IE5” folder seems to be to type its whole path in the address bar of the Windows Explorer (e.g. “C:\Documents and Settings\(…)\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5”).

Yet, I am afraid this must be done in the same Internet Explorer session when you opened and saved your attached file. The hidden folders with random names seem to be erased and recreated anew at each new session.

    Good luck,

    Mo

  153. OH MY GOD! my 30 page research paper that was due tommorow is now back in my sight!!!! i can finally wipe my tears away! this was excellent, im glad i looked into this

  154. OMG!!!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!! I swear i screamed and jumped for joy and thanked god that i got it back! have been working on it for hours and the deadline of my article is tomorrow… so again thank you soooo much!!

  155. Thx much, though I did not find the file but the instructions were excellent and I learned something new that added to my computer literacy. Best of luck to you.

  156. OMG, thank you so so sooooo much. You are truely a lifesaver, I thought I had lost 5 hours worth of work. You have turned my frown upside down :)

Thank you again for posting this.

  157. That was great.

I’m wondering if you can help me with a problem I’m having. I opened a document from a hard disk drive, which is no longer functional. I worked on a document in Word that I really need, but now have no access to. Do you think Word saved it somewhere on my physical, internal drive? If yes, how can I access it?

    Thanks for the great advice.

  158. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had tried all the other forum options and was almost about to give up – the difference with yours is the hidden files steps .. it makes all the difference! Once again thank you very much you have saved me a fail!

  159. My daughter just lost her saved essay, part of her final exams for her BSc. After an hour of struggles and tears my friend found your guide to recovery. Even though I had already enabled hidden files and looked carefully in the temporary Internet files I had no idea about the need to uncheck the hidden system files. Now I have a very happy daughter and a relieved mum and dad. Thanks very much for posting your advice.

  160. Oded,
After following your intial Alt T directions, I had no luck, so I read the comments and got to Helena’s September 10 post. (Thank’s, Helena!) By not including the last bit “Content…” and only using:
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\
a bunch of “hidden files” popped up. Then, in the top, right-hand side, I clicked on “details.” Then, I clicked on “type” and chose “Microsoft Word Document,” which narrowed the list down to two. I was almost fooled into thinking the last one was not the right file because the file name was different, but I right clicked, copied, and pasted the file onto my desktop. It was the file that I had opened in Yahoo, worked on for 6 hours, and saved, thinking I had saved it to my work folder. I can’t thank you enough! You are amazing!

  161. you are incredible! this is the best advice I have ever come across! You saved my entire research project! Thank you SO SO much.

  162. I have a Windows 7 computer but when I paste in the file path it says no search results available… :( I think I will die if I don’t get my assignment back please please help!

  163. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Everyone told me it was gone for good… but thank to you i recovered what i needed. Times like this make me really appreciate the internet and its ability to connect strangers. I am really, very grateful.

  164. As with the other comments, this was a lifesaver! Thanks so much for posting this info and allowing silly people like me who save from email to recover their docs!!!!

  167. I cannot thank you enough for your help. I am a very basic computer user and your instructions were clear and concise and saved me a lot of time.

  170. This saved me! Had been looking for a “lost” word doc (lots of edits to it) for around an hour and a half. It’s was a word doc downloaded from hotmail, I dutifully kept saving it but it was saving to the mystery hidden Internet files!!! Within minutes this guide helped me find my fully edited intact document (for coursework I may add) and so has saved me around 5 hours work!!! Thank you sooooooo much I had nearly resigned to rewriting tomorrow. Never will I make the same mistake again…but if do I know where to go! Thank you :-)

  171. For Windows 8 you have to go to settings/control panel/appearance and personalization to get to “folder options.” From there you follow the directions, but when I copied and pasted what you said to search nothing was found either way. Thank you for your info though, it might have worked if I had an older version of Windows.

  172. You saved me. I spent 2 hours online looking for a solution (including official Microsoft help pages) but your method saved my article. Thank you!

  173. Thank you so, so, so much!!!! Was near tears trying to find an essay I had worked on for hours and searched for probably about an hour and half – no other site helped as much as this one!!!! Tip to anyone else, really check those hidden files and use either the date or file type, as very nearly missed mine!!!! Again thank you so much, can finally go to sleep!!!!

  175. Thank you so much – this really does work. This was a life saver for me today. I lost a day’s worth of work and freaked out :-) I tried the same command before – but was not told to uncheck ‘Hide protected operating system files’ …..that was the key!

  176. So I tried your steps, although I was not able to copy and paste the long search name, I found it a different way through some other posts I seen. However, I still was not able to retrieve my document that I edited from an email attachment. There were actually more than one that I lost and was only ably to find half of one. I didn’t open either and yet I could only find half of one. Why is that? Is there any hope for me? Will I loose all my chances if I shut down my laptop completely?

  177. Dear Author,
i saw many comments into your address. i failed. please HELP:: i opened the document in Outlook and continuously was saving it, but now i cannot find it.
i carefully read the instructions, but at the very beginning, i had troubles: in Start menu where you posted your link: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

my computer doesnt give me the proper folder, instead it says: No items match your search… please help somebody anybody, my 15 pages of report is gone with winds!!! i have to submit my reports tomorrow… Jan 29th of 2013…SOS!!! HELP!!!

  178. These directions were incredible. No other websites helped until I came across this one. I followed the directions exactly and lo and behold, there was my paper sitting in a hidden ghost folder. Wow! I have no clue how you knew this, but it was a lifesaver!

  179. Thank you soooooooo much!!! After spending over 3 hours editing a paper, I thought it was lost forever. Let’s just say you saved me a few strands of hair :) Thanks, again!!

  180. Add one more to the chorus of ‘You saved me!’ Worked all day on the document only to discover that it wasn’t saved on my hard drive. I don’t understand my Word doesn’t mention that it’s not being saved in a proper location the first several times you hit CTRL+S but who am I to know the mind of Microsoft?

  181. IT WORKS! Three hours of work almost down the drain without you! You have no idea how much you helped us!

  182. Thank you so much!! I asked the ICT professional at my school (I’m a teacher) today & he had know idea. Thank goodness to google which made me find you!! yay!!

  183. This could well be one of the most important blogs ever written! Fantastic! :-) On behalf of everyone, thank you for this very important act of public service you have performed. :-)

  184. Thank you so much! I spent 3 hours writing an assessment, which is an absolute chore and I thought I’d lost it all! But I found it thanks to you! Thank you. :)

  185. NOTHING ELSE WORKED – THIS PAGE SAVED MY LIFE!!! So happy to have found my file. It was days of work (stupidly, I’d done ‘Save As’ then kept hibernating my computer)…….THANK YOU SO MUCH. I can’t recommend this webpage enough!

  186. Lewis is dead-on: You. Are. A. God. Six hours of hard work were recovered in less than ten minutes. And I had even re-opened the docs from my email before following your directions, but I still found them in their beautifully edited state among the hidden files. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

  187. I don’t know how to thank you, words cannot express my gratitude. It worked a treat, so simple. And your instructions were easy to follow, better than some of the others advice stuff that is on the web, making me lose my will to live and telling me to give up (I’m glad I didn’t). This page is now one of my favourite pages if it were to happen to me again or someone I know. Now I really believe if there is will there’s a way, especially with technology anyway!

  188. Oh my word, thank you so much!!! This is first site I have seen that suggests more than searching for *.docx. You have helped save my document and my attitude for the rest of the day. Wow! I thank God for you and pray he blesses you richly for helping all of us. Have a great day! I know I will :)

  189. It worked!!! I did open up the file from my email again after I lost it, so I wasn’t sure if I would be able to find it. there were a couple different files, in different folders, but I was able to find it. I am definately saving this to my favorites, just in case I ever need it again. I now have an extra hour to do something besides rewrite my paper. Thanks!

  190. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I now keep this page bookmarked as it has come in handy many many times for me, family, and friends. This time helped save a whole’s day work..

  191. I love you, I love you, I love you!!!!!!
I am a 32 year old wife and mother who works fulltime and am also a part time university student. My assignment was due tonight at midnight. I was very happy to finish it by 10:15 and get to bed at a decent hour… Then the unthinkable happened. After waking up my husband (who has to be up at 430am for work) in complete hysterics, I calmed down and did the ever-so-faithful google search for help and found you!!! Your instructions are very easy to follow and a complete lifesavor!!! I still can’t believe I did that, as I always hit save and not open, but oh well, I made a huge mistake and your amazing tutorial saved the day!!!
Again, Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!
My paper is in, and I am going to bed!!

  192. I tried several other suggestions I found online and nothing was working. And then I found you! It worked!! Another well-deserved THANK YOU from what would have been another person in crisis mode.

  193. I had spent 3 days straight working on a Microbiology study guide for a test that I really need to make a good grade on. It took me 2 days straight and a lot of organizing of notes and reading the book to get JUST HALF of my information together. After 30 minutes of sobbing in the library, I decided to try and google to see if this has happend to anyone. Found my file. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

  194. I was almost at melt-down yesterday evening. Worked for a couple of days on an essay straight from my email. Then saved it regularly without even thinking about the save as option, closed it and it disappeared. I had already been refused an extension and no way was my tutor gonna believe this one! Your instructions got my essay back, not only that but the very last version with all the hard work in. Thank you so very much. x

  195. Thank you so so very much for posting this! I am so grateful as hours of work went into my document, only to not be able to locate it anywhere.

The instructions were clear and easy to follow.

    Thank you again.

  196. Thank you so much!!!!!! I think you know, but this was extremely helpful and thank you for taking the time to do this and save alot of people alot of extra work trying to redo what they’ve already spent hours working on.

  197. Thank you and thank God for this post. I lost a lot of sleep last night but found your post this morning. Even though I had already opened, saved, and changed the attachment again the wrong way by just clicking open this file, I was able to recover my work from zombie land!!!! I wish I could shake your hand!!!!!!

  198. I am still not able to find my file. I saved it using the library computer and when I opened it from my email to see where would the file have gone to, “TEMP” I am afraid as you said, I wrote over it. I have lost 7 pages of my readings report. I am in tears.

  199. I LOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE YOU! GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooo much you’ve saved a dissertation!!xxx

  200. OMG!! Thank You so much! I have been working on this document for the past two weeks, and all I have been doing was clicking the save button. 201. OMG! Thank you sooooooo much for this post. I had been working on my dissertation for my degree and spent 10 hours reading and editing journals into my essay, and went I went to send it there was no sign of a the file on my hard drive. I scanned it for two hours with no avail! Until I googled for help and found this….. I literally screamed so loud once I had retrieved my work following your method, that I got asked to leave the library by the security team! Your a star! Thanks a million! – London, Uk

  202. help I followed instructions and i came across the same problem as Nariman

    January 27, 2013 at 11:30 pm

  203. Saved my paper! I had e-mailed it to myself from work. When I download it at home, I usually save it to the appropriate folder. Somehow I forgot to do this and just saved as I went. Little did I know that I was saving it to the “zombie land” and wouldn’t be able to find it.
I was in utter panic. I found this post while frantically searching for help. Much to my delight, after search through a few randomly named folders, I found my file!

    Thanks!

  204. Well, it has to be a fine service you are offering, because my students directed me here to see how they found their essays. I was aware of this problem–and you have a faster way, since you’ve given them a copy-‘n’-paste option. Thank you for your help: the tears were not wasted.

  205. Thank you so so much … I lost my dissertation and was crying my eyes out trying to find it !!! I followed your instructions and found in within minutes !! Thank you !!!!!

  209. YOU JUST SAVED MY LIFE i had 25% worth of my geography GCSE lost, and thanks to you i found it! but it wouldn’t work for me when i copied it into start so i copied it into the computer address bar and found my controlled assessments THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  217. Thanks so much – I nearly jumped out of the window, but then I found your site and recovered the spreadsheet I’d been crafting for 2 days.

  218. Hi there,
Thank you for the help, its genius that there is a way! I did it on a university computer, 2 days ago, I cant seem to find it using your method, I think perhaps its because files are only saved temporarily on these computers…. I still have hope though… any chance you have any other tips?
Thank you for your help :)

  219. As a would be novelist I lost some pages yesterday and a couple hours I serched in vain. I read post after posted article how to recover the pages but none of the suggestions worked. I was in a very dark mood and then I came across you article and the world suddenly became a whole lot brighter. Thank you for your excellent work.

  220. heey, how do u find a lost powerpoint that I downloaded from a VLE? I clicked open, then added about 5 slides, then clicked save and then it was gone? :( do u know what to do?

  221. Many thanks for your clear and concise instructions, they were instrumental in recovering my sister’s university assignment! I’m not the most tech savvy person and was having trouble following other online advice but then I came across this blog post and felt encouraged by your straight forward instructions and your sympathetic words. It was such a relief to receive help from someone who actually understands how stressful these situations can be. My sister was having a major meltdown (it wasn’t pretty) but your words saved the day so thank you muchly!

  222. Thanks a lot! I followed your instruction and explored teh zombie land. My file just stays there! Thank God I saw your post.

  223. Your suggestions are great but didn’t quite fit my dilemma. I did however find the answer here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-word/recovery-of-a-file-opened-in-a-zipped-file-and/422705c6-10ea-45c9-a9c7-632f9be520c3

So, Adam College Kid, hope you find your file using this method! Note though that I had to manually type the file path for appdata, it was hidden.

I have learnt my lesson now and won’t be saving files directly into an existing zip!

  224. WOW WOW AMAZING THANK YOU COULD NOT FIND MY CHURCH FILES BUT THANK GOD FOR YOUR WISDOM REDISCOVERED IT …YOU ARE BLESSED

  226. THANK YOU! I even took my laptop to the tech guys at my college yesterday (an hour before my paper was due, when I realized it was gone) and they couldn’t figure it out. Thank gawd for the internet! It may be late, but at least I don’t have to rewrite it!

  227. Well… I have many very tech savy people around and none of them could tell me how to get my file back… which I spent 2 hours editing and then didn’t want to re-do it… Thank you so much for this.. I’ve now booked marked these instructions!

  228. You should take donations!!!! Thank you so much for this. This is the second time this has happened to me. After the first time, I started using Google Chrome, so all my downloads saved to my desktop. Then, my computer crashed, and I didn’t realize I was using Internet Explorer instead of Chrome. Subsequently, my report was lost in Zombie Land. I tried several other methods I found online, and yours is the only one that worked. I was worried I’d ruined my chances by the time I stumbled across this post. Thanks again!!!!

  229. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just found a document that I had been working on for quite some time and I had lost for closing it without saving it to my desktop.

  273. Thank you so much for saving my mom from doing her report all over again. My mom is 65 years old and had been laboring all day yesterday finishing her financial report. I had told her to save numerous times and I saw that she did. Little did I know that the file she was saving was opened directly from her email. After she retired for the day, happy with her accomplishments, I checked on what she did but I couldn’t find it. I was already crying. I know she would be devastated if I told her that the file she had saved was gone and I couldn’t bear to see her work on the report again after all the time she spent on it. You are heaven sent for sharing this to us. Godbless you and your family!

  274. It told me no items matched my search. I figured it was a long shot since I had already closed out of everything. At least I have something to try when I neglect to save it from the beginning. I appreciate the info

  275. Hi, I did this on my work computer and it is windows xp professional. is it the same process? its not working :( ive been doing this paper for 12 hours!! help

I really didn’t want to re-do it and you saved me from that. I can’t thank you enough!!! :-)

  277. Who ever you are I thank God for your parents. They truly created a genius. I lost hours of work and by the grace of God you guided me to find it. thank you so much. I pray for your intelligence in this technological world.

Until I obtain it, I glad your able.

    I love you

  278. I am a late arrival to this post, but am very glad to report your recovery method is brilliant. I am an attorney and “lost” my document as addressed in your post. But your recovery process worked flawlessly. You should receive an honorary law degree for your help given to a lawyer!

  282. Thank you so much! Idk what I would have done if I did not find this post! I was crying before this how I spent all this time and my paper was gone. I tried every other method and was so upset! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

  283. Thank you! I don’t usually open files this way… but I opened it earlier today at a client’s office – then went back to it tonight to update some changes. This was an Excel file.

Granted, I could have recreated it my changes pretty quickly, but it was frustrating to no end that I could not search and find it! I had hidden files showing, but not system files.

Oh – and I went back and reopened it from the email again to see if I could figure out where it was saving it– no luck… but I was also lucky in that it didn’t overwrite my edited version.

  284. All I can say is that you are an angel! You saved me from typing a whole new paper on my Saturday off. Does suck I did not find you until after finishing a bottle of wine so now I cant leave the house but worth it! Thank you times infinity! You are truly a life saver!

  285. OHMYGOD. YOU’RE A GENIUS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GUIDE. YOU ACTUALLY SAVED MY LIFE :’) I worked on my essay for so long last night and I was in shock this morning to find that none of it had saved and that my notes were half missing. I actually had a melt down and almost cried but then I found this! Thank you soooo much!

  286. THANK YOU SO MUCH. We recovered the document within 3 minutes but was searching for this “zombie file” for more than an hour.

  287. Thank you so much. You’re right that all the other online suggestions for how to fix this fail. This helped so much, and I really did thank God that I found your page. Thanks and God bless.

  288. Had a research project due today for submissions in a very important court case. Accessed my email from internet explorer, even though I normally use chrome, kept on pressing save and closed it. Had a serious meltdown in the office as I searched diligently for the file, knew my job was on the line. Saw ur link online and followed the steps to a “T”, thank u so much Oded ur truly heaven sent. Thank uuuuuuuu, all the way from Jamaica :)

  289. Thank you a zillion times – I just recovered hours of work – was in near tears at the thought of re doing it all !

  290. I just did all of the above, including the header/footer idea. I found all the right folders, but…nothing! I did open the original attachment, though, earlier in the day. Perhaps I overwrote the changes?

  291. your an absolute legend, found my file of 1 weeks worth of work, thank you soo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  292. You are amazing! Thank you so much! Worked brilliantly. You have saved me hours of work and stress.

  293. You are an absolute star…
Saved me hours and an asswhipping from the boss. you’re a good man charlie brown

  294. Kia ora from New Zealand :) after deciding to call it a night at 12am I clicked control+s and then closed my doc! grrr! generally an optimist I was ready to admit defeat at 1.20am, and surrender to doing it all again tomorrow! grrr! Your instructions helped me to recover my work which is near completion, this is a huge blessing for me a working and studying single parent trying to balance it all! Thank you, I am oh so grateful

  295. I was about to cry, but your page helped me out in recovering a word doc that I have been working on for hours… mant thanks!!

  296. I was in tears that I had lost my final paper that is due TOMORROW. I can’t thank you enough for your help. I found it!!!!! I truly did think I’d be staying up all night rewriting the entire thing. Thank you; thank you; thank you!!!

  297. I didn’t get anything when I pasted the command in the search. Am I using a version of IE that doesn’t follow that search command?

  298. Damn dude – You just saved me a ton of work. This is an excellent step by step guide. I’m glad this came up as one of the first when I searched the web. Thanks again!

  299. OMG THANKYOU!!! My wife just finished editing a word doc via Facebook and lost it… I will be totally honest and took the credit and was heavily rewarded :))) Thankyou Tho

  300. So, I am one of those unlucky people who tried to re-open the file from Gmail BEFORE I found your instructions :( Does this mean that my file changes are lost forever?

  301. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!!!!! YOU SAVE ME BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  302. You my friend, are the absolute God of Internet. This is the second time I’d “deleted” a massive school assignment that was already late, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
If you ever need a place to stay, a dog sitter or even a hug, hit me up.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!

  303. Mate you have saved my life. I have two assignments due tomorrow and I lost the first one of them. I will gladly name my first child after you.

  304. OH MY GOD I am so happy. Thank you for this informative piece. I’m bookmarking it right now in case this ever happens again. I lost a research paper for a summer class that I spent 8 hours on. I saved it, closed Word and then tried to upload it to my Google Drive…and it was gone. I was almost about to start over (it’s 2AM right now…) and I found this. Thank you!

  305. This was an absolute life saver, three hours of work recovered I can’t thank you enough for the easy step by step directions. Your a lifesaver….

  306. OMG I wish I could find you and kiss you and hug you!! LOL. I spent the last hour trying to retrieve my final paper for class. I have read about 5 blogs and this is the only one that fixed the problem….and in about 5 minutes!!!! I am saving this post for sure!

  307. Well, you can add another “found file” to your list. Thanks for the post and more importantly for the knowledge!! Cheers :-)

  308. Thank you so so much for this posting, a serious god-send…now my tears seem so silly – at least a heartattack is no longer on the horizon ;-P

  309. Well, I just lost 3 hours of work because I had already reopened the attachment thinking somehow it might have saved back to itself in the email…….then I searched the web and found your solution. There was my file, but I had overwritten it! You wrote a great post. Thank you on behalf of everyone you are able to help.

  310. This is an invaluable post. You just saved me thousands of dollars and countless hours that would otherwise have been required to reproduce the proposal I’ve been developing for over a week. Even if I’d been able to recreate it, I would certainly have missed the submission deadline, and the organization I’m working for would have forfeited more than $40,000. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  311. OMG thank you soooo much, all the other advice I googled didn’t help and I thought my powerpoint seminar was gone for good. I even opened the email attachment (in attempt to locate it’s default path) which I just read here you should NOT do, but thankfully it didn’t overwrite it (probably cos I didn’t save the reopened file in caution). Thanks so much you have saved me from redoing my uni assignment due tomorrow, and it’s a group presentation so I’m not letting them down now! This magical “Content.IE5” folder was the trick! Thanks a million!

  312. Spent 3 hours myself trying to find my document. Followed your instructions and found it in 3 min. Awesome make sure you stop by here on your world tour for 2 drinks!!

  313. This absolutely worked – you just made my wife’s day and saved her a ton of time redoing a file. Thank you!

  314. sir, i have one excel file and its in “read only” mode. but now when i open this file after 3 days it gets an error and gives only contact number but don’t give other detail so how can i get all the detail????? plz

  315. Stunned. Thank you so much. Found minutes of a meeting night before school year when i really needed it. Fantastically well written instructions. God bless you.

  316. THANK YOU!!!! This worked perfectly- this has happened to me so many times. I sincerely appreciate this & will save these tips for future use!

  317. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!! I thought I lost 8 hours worth of a powerpoint… you had my heart pounding. I even had 2 tech guys look for it and they couldn’t find it either!

  318. Thank you soooo much! You saved me many hours of sleep and frustration. I really appreciate you posting this! It worked even after I opened the attached file again–it just had the two versions in there. Ahhh…so nice.

  319. I am a medical student. I was working on patient profiles… and in my final one I opened it straight from Windows Mail and started working on it…. 4 hours of work later at 2am I pressed “ctrl+s” and closed the window along with some other pdfs. Couldn’t find the file on desktop. Cheeks clenched up. You saved me 4 hours of work…. and now…. finally… I can sleep. I don’t usually leave pointless comments like this but you have no idea how happy I am right now. Cheers.

  320. This saved my holiday weekend! Thanks so much. Spending 3.5hrs doing this spreadsheet again was not how I wanted to spend my Labor Day!!! YAY

  321. OMG!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!! You are a legend. I have done this to myself on a few occasions (by mistake of course) and have never thought it was possible to find it again. It was only that I had lost so many hours this time I thought there MUST be a way. Thank you again for saving my sanity!!!

  322. You are a saint. Thank you. You saved me after I failed to “save as” my edited attachment! You are the smartest computer wizzard:-)

  323. Thank You SOOO MUCH!!!! This really helped had a paper that I almost had to redo a lot of now I don’t! I almost got scared about the overwrite thing because I did reopen the attachment a few times before I looked this up. Thanks again, cannot be more greatful!!! And yes I did jump and praise God :)

  324. You seriously saved my life!!! Seven straight hours of hard work saved all thanks to you! thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank youthank you thank you thank you!

  325. few… so thankful to have stumbled upon your suggestions!! THANK YOU so happy I was able to track down the document I had been working on for the last 5 hours!!!

  326. God bless you! I believe the Lord led me to your wonderful instructions, which helped me save a document I had worked on for over 7 hours. You are awesome. Thanks!

  327. Thank you so much!!!! you posted the best guide ever!!!! I had to prepare an essay in English (which is not my native language)…. imagine the big damage for not saving my files correctly.

  328. Thank you so much. I had worked for hours to complete a presentation for a follow-up job interview – and it was lost. It was midnight, and the presentation was at 7:30 a.m., I just couldn’t see staying up all night to fix it. But your blog saved me! Your Instructions were clear and yes, it required so patience, but I nearly cried tears of relief when I found it.

  329. I’ve been scrolling forever to get a spot to tell you THANK YOU!!! I carefully followed your steps and found my daughter’s middle school paper she had been writing for days. I’m forwarding this to everyone I know. After my church message tonight you just confirmed that God definitely hears prayers and lead me to your post. You are a Blessing!

  330. YOU are the only one that had the correct answer to this problem. I had looked for a lost email attachment file for an hour – every other suggestion was wrong! You are a genius!! THANK YOU!!

  331. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!
So desperate when I finished my paper at 2 am and found it’s gone!
Now I can go sleep instead of reworking!!

  332. Thanks man!! You saved me 15 hours of work!!!!! thanks for posting this solution

Btw It was not in the IE folder, but after checking the un-hides and not finding it in the IE5 folder I used the search on the right top with a part of the name and it popped up (it was in the appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\content.outlook

  333. Thank you thank you thank you – you’d think after doing this three times I would learn my lesson. Your instructions are now posted on my office wall. Thank goodness for a safety net for idiots like me.

  334. HELP!!!!!!!!! I was so excited to find this apparently successful way to recover an Excel file I foolishly opened from a Gmail, changed then didn’t save before closing. But when I pasted your suggested file path into the search box on the Start Menu (Windows 7, IE 10) I get a message saying nothing found. What now???

  335. I LOVE YOU MAN!!! You Just saved an Appellate brief that was due tomorrow – to be filed in the Fed Court!!! I LOVE YOU – and so does my client! :)

  336. Brilliant . . helped me save my wife’s school work, just the info I needed to point me in the right direction.

  337. Unfortunately I was not able to find my work because I reopened the email prior to reading your article. However, I appreciate the information and this will save me a lot of time in the future. Thank you :)

  338. Thank GOD for you! I spent 3 hours working on a document after I emailed it to myself and couldn’t find it this morning. One thing I will change on here though is that nothing happened when I did the ctrl + alt + T so I searched in the search bar, where it showed up :)

  339. Thank you from the UK, I thought an hour and a half of working at home on a Sunday was lost, I will never, ever do that again, although I know where to look if I do.
    Love ya x

  341. Thank you SOOOOOO much! you saved me! I thought it wouldnt work but I found it in the third file I checked! Thanks!!! :) תודה

  342. I wish I found this earlier! Overwrote the file following a friend’s bad computer advice. Sigh. But now I will know for next time! I’ve bookmarked this page. So so useful :)

  343. I have windows 8 and do not have a normal start menu. I tried pasting your link in the weird windows 8 start menu (where it sorts by files apps extensions) and nothing come up. Please help!

    1. Hi Makenna, I updated the instructions. To get the ‘Search’ bar just tap the Windows logo key + R, then follow the steps. Good luck.

  344. THANK YOU! I followed your directions and it was right where you said it was. You just saved me an entire day of editing a document.

  345. Thank you for your help.I genuinely believe the queen should issue medals for selfless internet acts such as this…

  346. This was incredibly well-written! You are obviously talented and bless you for sharing that with those of us who are in a panic over losing a document. Your instructions worked beautifully. You saved me an hour of rework. Thank you so much!

  347. for those of you who are still trying to find the document/whatever, HAVE NO FEAR. keep the hidden files thing going and then SCOUR the files before each one. keep organizing by date modified, and keep backtracking, one folder at a time. you may have a chance to find yours. I found mine under User/appdata/local/Temp :D

  348. You are a lifesaver!!!! I had just about given up, but this got my document back. Thanks so much, Icould not face re-writing that thing.

  349. This was amazing! So helpful but I’m so mad because I had already opened the attachment from my e-mail again. So, I wasn’t able to recover my document but now I will know how to avoid this in the future :)

  350. I cannot say thank you enough! Your directions were so clear and easy and it really saved my ass. I worked for 6 hours on a master’s thesis and about cried when I realized what I had done. Thank you thank you thank you!

  351. I cant just get my doc back leaving without saying thanks to u. You sir truly saved me. My paper will due in 1 hour, and you really saved me. God bless you forever thank u so much!!!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH
I literally cried earlier when I thought this was gone !

  354. A very BIG THANK YOU. Excellent result which has saved me 3 hours extra work BUT NO I don’t want to marry you – Nora got that in first!

  355. Dear Oded Ran,

I usually never left a comment, but this truly saved the day.
Thank you so much, I can finally hit the bed.

  358. I just finished a paper and did not save it the right way. i downloaded it from my email and opened it on my desktop. After spending hours on it, I saved it, but once I went to submit it to class, it was gone. I cried for 20 minutes until I just sucked it up and got on Google. Thank you SO MUCH! I was stressed out. Like, I wanted to drop out of school. From now on, I am going to have to use my laptop. I am so over desktops.

    THANK YOU X999999999999999999999999999999999999.9999

  359. Thank you very much ! I’m not a novice in computing but forgot your step 6 “uncheck the box of the option ‘Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)” and so I thought my 2hours of worksheet effort was two hours of my life wasted. People like yourself that write these articles and make people’s lives easier deserve sincere thanks.

    1. Ooh, actually I don’t. I suspect that Firefox also has some system hidden folder, but I am not quite sure, sorry Andy.

  360. I just recovered a document from Firefox. I followed your instructions exactly except I did not put the end part “\content.IE5” and it worked perfectly! THANK YOU!

  361. I was able to recover my document with all the hours I spent entering equations. This is the second time this has happened. And yes, I am using IE9 (against my will). I downloaded my document from my GDrive, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it works as if it were Webmail. I am infinitely grateful to you! Life is a little brighter now :)

  362. I was freaking out because I “lost” my paper that I’d been working on and it’s due today. Luckily my husband googled how to retrieve the file, followed your instructions and just like that we found it. Thank goodness too, otherwise I would’ve had to withdraw from the class because there’s no way I can write another 10 page paper in just a few hours. Thanks a lot!

I had even done what you said not to do about opening the file again from my e-mail, but thankfully it didn’t overwrite. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

  367. Thanks a ton! Can’t believe you have the only complete instructions on how to find this file. Other sites seem to be off the mark.

  368. This happened to my sister before and I found this article really useful. It just happened to me tonight after working away on an excel doc. and came accross this again by luck. I’m pretty sure I love you!!!! It’s 2:43 a.m. and I have school tomorrow. I’m bookmarking this time just in case!

  369. THANK YOU! Had just drafted very lengthy answers to an investment banking internship application form and could have cried when I thought I had lost it! Thank you so much!

  370. what about words files that were saved but something weird happened and the sheets disappeared, just the blue part remained. i closed it (knowin gi have saved all changes, and yes, the fiel was saved itself, worked on it for more than one day) now i cannot find it!

  381. You just helped save my girlfriends final paper for her undergrad career. Without this she would have had to pull an all nighter to retype virtually the entire 8 page single spaced paper. Having two finals starting at 8 am that would have most likely resulted in a poor showing on her final grade. I cannot express how much this simple post has helped, as the rest of the internet was useless virtually. We may now sleep easy. Thank you, again. Kum la da here we come!

  382. holy crap i finally found it after 4 hours of searching like a maniac. Thank you, i don’t know what i would have done without this guide

  383. I never actually post any comments onto someone’s blog, but I really have to say a HUGE HUGE thank you to you!! You totally saved my day and time as well. A big thank you to you from Hong Kong!! (:

  384. You are my hero right about now! I can’t thank you enough for the help….and the ability to breathe again now that I found my paper and can submit it on time!!!!!

    THANK YOU!

  385. Thank you so very much, you just saved me from losing some valuable data that I would not have been able to recreate in any way. I lost my file yesterday and even though I reopened it yesterday hoping to find it in my gmail and I opened it again this morning and click save again, I was still able to find it after looking through all the folders. Thank God I found it and thank you for sharing this information with us.

  386. Kriss,
I thought I had done just that by saving the reopening the file and again and clicking save, but I was tilla ble to find my actual file looking through all the folders with a (1) added to the name. I would say to check all the folders, I think it’s worth an extra few minutes of your time and all the headaches that come with the recreating of the document.

  387. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! i have just cried for about 30 minutes thinking i had lost all the work i had done, i was just about to submit the work and then realised i couldn’t find it, and i have got it all back! thanks to you! thank you so much! honestly you have made one person very very happy today!!!! thank you again!

  388. You are an angel. You have no idea what a miracle this is… THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! For people struggling with not having an ie.5 folder (I didn’t either!), just go up a level to %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and type the file extension of the file you are searching for in the search box – I typed .xls and found my file.

  389. Thank you very much. I found the missing file for my husband. He is so thrilled had been ages searching for it. Thank you very much.

    Louise (Ireland)

  390. Three days of intricate, hard work on a spreadsheet recovered thanks to your knowledge and more importantly, open hearted willingness to share. Thank you so much. When we are eventually in Heaven (assuming I will get there) I will stand you a couple of drinks!

    Sarah, London

  391. I had this exact problem a moment ago, but I was using Firefox. How do I do this with Firefox? I am desperate! I just perfected a presentation and saved it (or so I thought) and now it’s GONE! Please, please, please help!

  392. can not even put into words how thankful I am for your article. thought I had lost hours of work bout ready to cry, googled and found your article and found my file in 5 minutes. you are a lifesaver.

    thank you!!!!!!

  393. You’re a star!! It worked for me.. I had given up hope and tried lots of other methods but nothing else worked. Take a bow. Thankyou so much!!

  394. Add a Sunday morning sermon to the list of emailed items saved! I’m using firefox and windows xp so things were a little different, but your instructions still helped immensely. Path was c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp. I sorted by date modified and it was easy to find. Thank you thank you thank you!

  395. I cant express my thanks to you in words. May God bless you with full of happiness in life. Thank youuuuu!!!!!!!

  396. Thank you so much – I’d re-opened the file this morning so after reading step 2 I thought the worst, that I’d overwritten all my work! I stuck with it and went through all the folders, I came across three versions of the overwritten file until finally I found it! So happy!!

  397. Wow thank you so much this has saved my son hours of work and me lots of heartache. Bless you many times over. Jax

    1. Hi Anat, I have no idea. I would never dream about using a Mac for anything other than watching movies! :-)

  398. SOS!! What to if you have a Mac?

I would really love to join the chorus of “THANKS YOU’S” but I’m afraid I lose my Excel document on a Mac. I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have for me! I’m currently in freak out mode.

    1. In honestly don’t know, so sorry. The best advice I can give you is to never ever use a Mac for anything work related. I abandoned my MacBook Air after 6 months of suffering with Word and Excel not working. Not to mention how impossible it is to type a document when your keyboard is missing the very essential PgUp, PgDn, End and Home buttons.

  399. GOD BLESS YOU !!! THANKS ALOT for putting this detailed way of saving my life :) !!!!!
I did step by step and IT WORKED though I didn’t expect to see my ppt again… all just like you said – too hurry to do the work, no time to click SAVE ((((((

    Thank you so much again!

  400. Now i can breathe , thank you so much. Yesterday i opened a ppt file through internet explorer. Edited the file 8 hrs(almost whole night) and saved it and sleep. But when i tried to open the file today, i noticed that the file was missing. I knew what had happend but i dont have idea about recovering the file. I went to your page through google. Your explainations and instructions where what i need. Am happy now. Millions of thanks and may you have a happy life ever. ( from now on i will never open a file without saving )

  401. Have you reached 1,000 comments yet? I definitely owe you a drink on your worldwide tour! You saved my butt from losing 3.5 hours of group work that would have otherwise been lost. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  402. Seriously, thank you. I spent hours working on something related to my dissertation, came back from lunch, and it was GONE! After frantically searching my entire hard drive with no luck, I realized it must have been some kind of GMAIL open vs. save problem. After searching the internet for 15 minutes, not knowing exactly what search terms to ask for to solve this bizarre problem, I finally stumbled across your blog. Thank goodness! I found my missing file in the second folder and saved myself hours of recreating my work. Thank you, thank you, thank you! (And I will never click “open” again – will always save first from here on out…)

  403. Oh my gosh you saved my life. Thank you so much. Although, I had already smashed my lapdesk and gotten the little beans everywhere beforehand.

  404. I closed down my 5000 word document worth 50% of my mark the day it was due. I only had 1100 words when I reopened it. What was such a horrible, stressful morning was made so much better when late that night I came across these instructions. The relief and happiness I felt when I opened up the icon with my assignment name and to see the full word count was incredible. I handed it in a day late, but I didn’t get any penalties. Thank You.

  405. I love you, I love you, I love you, I am going to name my next child after you!
Oh My, you have no idea of the amount of work you saved me. Tears of Joy! I am so very grateful that you took the time to prepare this step by step. I love you, I love you, I love you!
PS. Greetings to your wife, I know she will understand! :O)

  406. Thank you!!! I was balling my eyes out before finding this page. I can’t believe I was so careless not save. My 5 page paper for MBA was recovered!

  407. I would like to add my thanks for this very useful article. You saved my partner a considerable amount of time and stress. Thank you :)

  408. Add another “thank you God!” to your list. Found it – had to be very patient, but 45 min. of looking saved 5 hours of work.

  409. I COULD KISS YOU!!!!!!!! I was working on an organic report for two hours and it was beautiful as I gave a sigh of relief knowing it was done I closed the window and all I could think was NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
You can never ever know how much you have done for me!! Thank you with all of my heart

  410. Thank you so much-my son just spent 2 hours finishing his homework which I then tried to e-mail to his teacher only to find he had been working from the e-mail file and thinking that pressing save meant he had saved it!He was understandably upset!

I am so grateful that people like yourself, who understand computers can be altruistic enough to offer help to buffers like myself who just sort of muddle on through invariably making a pigs ear as we go!

  411. May I request that you do a post for files lost that were downloaded from Mozilla? These awesome, user friendly instructions are quite needed there.

  412. Thank you. I can’t believe my paper was there. This was my last resort, I found this article just after giving up and went back down stairs to see if it would work. Thanks again.

  413. WOW…………. I actually believed one of the comments online saying going back and reopening the file will bring it back- now I found the file, but it’s overwritten…..@$^%&*^&*&(^&^%&$%&$!@$dsfhgkj;hkg

  414. Thank you very much…I found it…After trying several methods finally for the god’s sake i found this link..it helps me to find the document..May you get more and more brain power and be able to help thousands of others..

  415. OMG Thank you. I was so scared I had lost the updated verison for my disseration that I’ve been working on all day. Thank you Thank you Thank you and Thank God

  416. I had actually saved mine without looking where it was saving and it saved it to C:\users\userprofile\AppData\Local\Temp. and it was right there. The way I found was by opening a different document from my email and hitting save as to see where it would go.

P.S. I was opening a gmail attachment from Firefox.
P.P.S. I also had to click the “show hidden” and “show program protected” things before I found it.

  417. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Firefox.

I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to
do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d
post to let you know. The style and design
look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Many thanks

  418. Just finished two university essays and this happened to me. This could have potentially absolutely destroyed my degree if not for your help. THANK YOU.

  419. If there’s a heaven… you’re going there. This is efficiency at its finest. I will have to publicize this page.

  420. Thank you! I successfully recovered a Website planning document I had edited using track changes without properly saving it. The first version I found was the unedited version, but only slightly discouraged, I stubbornly kept looking and found the final version! Other users should be aware that there may be more than one version of your document and if they are in separate folders, the one you are looking for may not be overwritten just because you’ve re-opened the document. You’ve just saved me a great deal of time and frustration. This is not the first time I lose documents by opening attachments without saving them, so I should know better… but now I do! My deepest gratitude, Chantal

  421. Worked like a charm ! Who know how easy a fix this is . . Saved me hours worth of rewrites. For anyone reading this, best must-do 1st action after opening that attachment . . SAVE AS !!! THANKS A BUNCH !!!!

  422. im so glad for everyone here how this saved their life…somehow i seem to be the lucky loser. my file is there and when i open it it even says at first that its 12 pages, but then within seconds it changes to 8 pages and its the original document ive opened from my email account. i can not not not write those 4 pages again. its terrible! any further advice?

    1. Have you checked all sub-folders? Maybe it’s saved as a different file? Shame, hope you get to find it. 4 pages is better than 100 pages!

    1. Yep, but there are sometimes multiple sub-folders within the hidden system folder. Hope you find it.

  423. I so wish I had read this before reopening the file from Hotmail… :(
But at least I know what to do for the next time! Thanks *weeps uncontrollably/

  424. Thanks so much, I would have never recovered my work if not for you. Drinks on me when you hit Montreal on your world tour!

  425. Thank you! I save my Wilfried conference article even if she had reopened it several times from her gMail :-)

  426. EVEN IF YOU FIND A VERSION THAT’S THERE AND YOU THINK YOU’VE SAVED OVER IT, KEEP LOOKING. DONT GIVE I HOPE BECAUSE I ALMOST DID BUT I DIDNT AND I FOUND IT AND THANK YOU SO MUCH. OOMMGJGIWHSVIW

    :)

  427. There is another way to do this. On my computer, Microsoft Word files were not displayed in the temporary internet files accessible by your link. In order to overcome this, I re-downloaded the essay from my email (although, I know you said not to this, I think it will work if your computer internet options are NOT set to delete all temporary internet files after exiting). When the essay opened it was titled as the 5th version. I clicked “save as” in order to open up the exact destination where this file was saved. Lo and behold, the first version of my essay was in this file. That was the one I had been saving. If nothing else works – give this a try. It saved me!

  428. Thank you!!!!!!! You truly saved the night! This worked!! Nothing on Microsoft support even came close! Your directions were on point!

  429. You are a legend and you have saved me a lot of heartbreak. Thank you so much for your amazing advice. Lifesaver!!!!!!!!

  430. I could quite literally hug you! A morning’s work no longer wasted – can’t thank you enough. Am doing a dance around the office!

  431. Hey oded- PLEASE HELP! Is there any possibility of recovering the deleted temporary files which have been overwritten by saving further versions of a word attachment? Surely they must exist somewhere?

  432. Thank you so much. Had edited and finalised a document that needed to be submitted in the morning and stupidly thought I had saved it. Your step-by-step instructions saved the day… and lots of hours retyping and redrafting!!!

  433. Thank you so much! And also to Sophia, who suggested looking under User/appdata/local/Temp with the same settings. That’s where my files were (d/led from Gmail in Firefox).

  434. Thank you!!! Just recovered a ten page paper due in the morning! I spent the last hour crying before finding this!!!!!!!

  435. OMG! I worked on this file for 5.5 hours today and could not find it – until I followed your excellent instructions! I am still doing the happy dance!! Thank you

  436. You saved me from having to complete a whole new report. You have no idea how happy I am to have found this link. Did a happy dance!!

  437. Thanks so so so much! I had to turn in an assignment tommorow, and lost it in the same way doing the final changes…. I was desparate! I would not be able to do it all over again! And now my paper is saved too!

  438. Unbelievable!!!!!!! You saved me sooo much time!! Thank you soooo much for posting such a well-documented tutorial on how to recover the file that I neglected to save locally after opening from my webmail account. THANK YOU!!!!!

  439. Thank you very much – I was so sure my 8 hours of work were gone forever! My 19 year old son was very impressed with – first of all me for finding a solution and secondly – how simple it was. You are a star!

  440. I was at breaking point and then found this and am saved! You are a life saver. Simple and effective instructions. Thank you so so so much :)

  441. I have literally NEVER posted a comment on a webpage like this but YOU JUST MADE ME VERY HAPPY!!!! Thank you so much for this guide. My heart is still racing but my paper is right HERE! Holy moly. Thank you!

  442. Thank you!!!!!! I almost just clawed into my own skin after I thought I lost the work I’ve been working on all day. LESSON LEARNED. Never just “open”, work on the document, and then hit “save”, thinking it’ll be in your Downloads folder! First I wanted to cry tears of anger, but now I want to cry tears of joy. *wipes forehead, picks heart up off the floor*

  443. THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED IT WAS A GREAT MOMENT WHEN I HAVE FOUND MY DOCUMENT WHICH I HAVE SPENT DAYS DOING IT.

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH

  444. So… I loved that I could find the work that I thought i had lost… and like everyone else if you were here when i located the file I would have kissed you! But… now it say I can’t open the file “my current security setting do not allow you to perform systems commands on this item”. and when attempting to paste back into google drive “document not found”… crap. I wish I wish… i had used the save as button :)

  445. Your brilliantly clear instructions led me straight to my ‘lost’ document. Thank you so much. Seven hours of work rescued from oblivion.
(By the way, I had already opened the attachment again from email, but did nothing more than look at it before closing the file. This, thank goodness, did not mean that I had lost all the work I had done.)

  446. You just saved 2 graduating seniors from losing their final project! Many thanks, my friend, We owe you a beer. We even got yelled at by my neighbor for the screaming for joy part.

  447. You’re awesome, and this post saved many hours of work. This post is now permanently bookmarked, though I hope I’ve learned my lesson and never have to use it again.

  448. A thousand thank yous! I wrote a news story on deadline and was faced with re-writing it and omg, even though I had re-opened the attachment the finished story was still there. And now I’ll never make that mistake again.

    Did I say thank you???

  449. I love you!!!!! Thank you sooooooo much – I’ve just saved myself hours of redoing work!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

  450. you are a savior.. thanks a lot.. But should be careful not to open the same file again from IE or outlook.. :D

  451. thank you so much!!!
I surely don’t want to revise the same old topic again for another 5 hours!! :D
    THANKS AGAIN!!!

  452. I press alt+t in the third step but nothing is happenning! Does anyone knows what i’m doing wrong ??

  453. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Thought i’d lost almost a whole days worth of work – absolute life saver

  454. OMG thank you soooo much :) i worked like houres on that project, so my heart skipped like 3 beats when i found out that it didn’t save correctly, but i’v got it back :D you saved me a few houres off redoing my work
    THANK YOU :D

  455. Hi there,
This seems like great advice! I followed all the step but, alas, the spreadsheet I’ve spent 9 hours is nowhere to be seen. Is there a different set of steps to follow if the file was originally opened from Chrome, rather than Internet Explorer? Like, would the link we copy and paste at the start be different?
    Best,
    Georgia

  456. Daghang Salamat! (Thank you so much)
Again thank you so much and thank God for making you an instrument! I’m so relieved that I recovered my file that I’ve worked on for more than 3 hours especially that I’m on a graveyard shift. Thanks again. Thanks a lot. No words can describe how thankful I am to you! Thank you!

  457. What a terrible terrible loophole in windows this is. I opened a file from Window Live Mail – unfortunately I couldn’t find it even after your great explanation. Four or five hours of work lost :(

  458. Thank you so much! I am not going to lie I was in full tears for about 4 hours until I came upon this link and was given a glimpse of hope :) I had tried everything but this was the solution. I cannot thank you enough, I am sure you have saved many lives and certainly mine! thanking you and god right now!

  459. OMG! Thank you SO much…it’s the second time this happened to me. Opened a word file from Windows Live Mail, worked on it for an hour (and I have autosave, so I’m used not to click too often on the “save” button) and then saved and closed it. Of course it was saved on nothing since I forgot to transfer the file to my computer.
Last time it happened to me 2-3 years ago and I remember I found a solution online to recover it. And here it is again (I bookmarked your link this time cause you never know…LOL)

  460. I followed the instructions and got to where I should have gotten, but it still isn’t there…I am panicking.

  461. thanks so much!!! you just saved my life. Well, not really, but I would’ve had to stay up all night reformatting the document I spent all day working on. Thanks again and you’re the best!!

  462. You have no idea how grateful I am for this!! i was able to find my file in minutes. Thank you so much.

  463. Thank you so much, having spent a morning writing reports I thought the whole lot were gone!! You’re a lifesaver. I could kiss you xx

  464. Just to add my comment to the many along simialr lines, spent all night editing a document, bieng good and saving as I went, only for it to disappear seemingly into thin air when I exited it. After following your very clear steps, voila! File found. Thank you :)

  465. Oh thanks more than I can ever say. 8 hours of work lost and recovered in an hour after finding the string for windows Live Mail users and then this blog while chatting online with my useless internet service provider tech support (“have you checked for the file on your computer in ‘My Documents’ in the default folder where attachments get saved?”). I have to say though, typing in %userprofile% etc in my Start menu didn’t work… probably because I’ve made some dumbass modification to my file paths. But when I copied and pasted C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ replacing with my user name into the Windows Explorer address bar, I was able to access the folder then just follow the instructions from your step 4 onward. THANKS!!!!!

  466. Thank you thank you thank you! I spent hours doing a very tedious job this afternoon and thought it was gone for good. You helped me find my lost file. I nearly cried from joy when I found it. Woo hoo!

  467. I wish I could buy you a case of whatever you drink! Thanks to you I recovered a whole chapter of my dissertation.

  468. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :) I was doing a calculations for the past full days and it happened to me as well.. It’s my last day before holidays trip to Sicily. You saved me an extra day or two.
    Best Regards

  469. I could not believe it when I saw my document appear on the screen again. Thank you ever so much. Although I was not sure how to fut the files back to normal. Does it matter in what view do I select the ALT+T? All the hidden files which appeared on the desktop are now gone so I assume I done it correctly. I hope as it’s my work laptop.

  470. On Windows 7, this did not work, but this did. Went to “computer” and clicking, in order:
    OS (C:)
    Users
    [your name]
    AppData
    Local
    Temp

Grab tissue to wipe away tears of joy.

  471. BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really don’t have 6 hours to recreate this data correlation project. You are kind to share your expertise!!

  472. Your instructions worked to find my file, thank you! It was actually a Word document I opened from a support desk application and in the folder “Temporary Internet Files” the document contained a link that took me to the support desk application rather than opening the file in Word. On a last attempt at recovering the data I copied the file and moved it to My Documents and then I could open the document in Word and save it properly to the correct location. Just a little extra tip in case someone runs into the same issue.

  473. For people who have experienced this problem with Firefox:

Follow the instructions provided here, EXCEPT use this line on step 3:

    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\temp

    1. Thanks Paul! I added it to the step-by-step instructions above. Glad to hear this helped Firefox folks too.

    2. The instructions above would save many lives. But today it didn’t work for me!!! I was for for my 6 page proposal while crying:( AND THEN miracle happened!!!!! I used this path on your comment and found IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! THANK YOU SO MUCH! For you all.

  474. Thank you so very much for this extremely straightforward and helpful guide – I wish I had found this before as I have made this error on several occasions (usually when I’m in a rush because it is something urgent).
    You are a life saver!!

    Jo

  475. Thank you so much! You just saved my GCSE coursework. Never just opening from an email attachment again! :D

    – Elliot

  476. I do not know who you are, but you SAVED MY LIFE!! I sent work home via word file through email, completed HOURS of work, and made sure to save periodically. Nonetheless, when I was done, I hit save, and my precious work was gone!! I thought I’d faint!! Followed your directions to a T.. and I now have my full documented that I edited! Don’t know you but I love you for this!!!!

  477. Thank you so much. You have saved my four hours work. May God bless you and expand your wisdom. Jk Kenya – Africa

  478. Wow, I almost had a heart attack. At 11:30 pm after a near all-nighter the previous night (followed by a day of work/kids/summer camps and all that, husband out of town), I had worked for 3 additional hours with intense focus. I know this problem. I’ve done this before (never to find the file), and I am dedicated to avoiding it again by clicking save. And yet. And yet ,here I was ,again. The disgusting feeling of there is no way I can repeat this effort + if I don’t I will never meet my deadline had me hyperventilating. Must google. I only got to step 2 for Firefox in your list and I found it! In this case, I did save it by a different name, but I didn’t pay attention to where the file went. I absolutely could not find it without your tips ,and I’m reasonably savvy. Needless to say, THANK YOU!

  479. thank you! thank you! i was about to really lose it (both all my work AND my mind :) so helpful!wow. just thank you.

  480. Wow, that was a huge time and stress relief. I’m at the end of an intense academic term and I thought I’d lost my final project. Thank you so much for sharing!

  481. Thank you so much. I thought I’d just lost an important academic project. I appreciate and admire that you took the time to share this with others. Thanks again!

  482. OMG !! I lost hope after 3 hours of crazy search. i had no idea a downloaded docx would lost.Thank you so so much dude. Even twit your page :D

  483. Thanks for the great instructions, you saved my final draft of my grad school application

  484. Thank You brother for this wonderful help. It worked just as you sau. The Lord bless, give you and and broaden your tents. May your coofers be filled and may you enjoy the works of thy hand. God Blessings upon you and your family. A grateful user. Thanks again.

  485. There are people saying you can’t do it if on a Mac, that’s not true at all, I did it yesterday (thank God I kept looking despite naysayers on these comments!

    Here’s what I did

Step 1: Show hidden files, go here for an explanation http://ianlunn.co.uk/articles/quickly-showhide-hidden-files-mac-os-x-mavericks/

    Step 2. Follow this breadcrumb in finder /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Office/Office 2011 AutoRecovery

That’s all! Wanted to come back and share with everyone! Good luck

  486. You are WONDERFUL. Thank you so much – I spend 2 hours working on a doc while my daughter napped and of course as soon as my deadline arrived and daughter woke up the file was lost. I’d have been in so much trouble if that work was lost! Phew.

  487. OMG thank you so much!! It worked just like you said it would, I almost cried!! Hopefully I won’t need this advice again but thank you thank you thank you!!
    Penelope

  488. It worked! Easy as pie. Just needed the link to the Outlook Temp folder which would have taken me hours to find. Thanks for this tip!

  489. Thank you!! I was about to write off my new PC for good! You helped me recover work I’d opened in Firefox. Very valuable assistance. Thank you.

  490. thank you. the only thing i had to de differently was to use “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content”

  491. This was a life saviour!!! thanks a looot man! I was about to throw my computer to the lake along with myself…

  492. There are no words right now, to say how grateful I am that you took the time to make this post. After spending an entire day following other threads leading me nowhere, I was finally about to give up. Then I stumbled across this. You’re an absolutely legend!!!!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you

  493. You saved my life tonight! I can’t thank you enough!! The thought of going to bed tonight after losing 4 hours of hard work was going to just do me in. Truly grateful.

  494. I am sooooooo greatful to you for putting this online, i literally cried for hours coz i lost my workthat took me hours to do ……god bless you ….thanks so much!

  495. Thank you so much..I went from two extremes of emotion so quickly that I now am shivering. Thank you for saving me hours of work..

  496. I am working on my dissertation right now for my doctorate and you have saved me a lot of work and my sanity.

  497. I hate excel but my teacher had us do this long assignment. I found half that I had saved correctly and the other half was missing. Thanks to you I will not have to redo the other half. :)

  498. THIS IS AMAZING!!!! I was slightly worried about it being a virus address or smt, but I had faith and it worked!! This saved my final exam grade! THANK YOU SO SO SO much! I follow step 12 instructions- Jumped up and down and tanked God for this! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  499. THIS SAVED MY LIFE!!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! MY LAB REPORT WAS DUE AT 11:59, AND I DIDN’T WANT TO START OVER! THANK YOU THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOU!! THANK YOU THHANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :)

  500. Thank you so so so much for your help and the very clear directions. I am not very computer savvy, but it all worked exactly as you said. Thank you!!!!

  501. Thank you SO MUCH, you saved an entire morning of work that I don’t think I could have re-created. May much good karma come your way!!

  502. I woke up in the middle of the night because I realized what I did, thank you, you saved me from staying up all night and re-writing my paper!!! And I will take your advice, never open always save, thanks!

  503. Two and a half years later, your blog is still saving files and making users happy. The details you gave were exactly perfect. (Like others, I usually do something smarter than I did today; I will return to my more careful ways.) Thank you again so much. Do you mind if I share this link with others who might give up, not knowing this is possible?

    1. Thanks so much Valerie, of course feel free to share this with other ‘lost document’ casualties :-)

  504. You are a lifesaver!! Not all of those steps worked for me (I swear windows 8 is just trying to mock us!) but it got me close enough and I was able to find my document! Thank you so much!!

  505. My lost document was downloaded from an e-mail in Firefox. Using the search field connected to the Windows icon didn’t work for me. So frustrating! But finally I was able to find it by clicking the Folders icon, then going to C:// under Computer, then opening Users, then (in my case) Asus User, then typing in \AppData\temp in the location field at the top, NOT the Search field. Behold a glorious array of temp files. It was easy to find my desired document when I clicked Date Modified, which moves the most recent to the top. And you better believe I hit Save As forthwith.

I hope this tip is helpful for those who, like me, just get a “no items match your search” message when they put the correct string in the Windows search box. Click the Folders icon instead!

    Thank you!

  506. Appreciate the easy step by step. You just allowed me to save a co worker from failing a class. The doc she was missing was due today and you helped me to locate it for her. Great Job.

  507. OMG! Thank you so much. I just spent 3 hours typing up an assignment for uni and I thought I had lost the lot!! I was sitting here in tear!! I could literally run through the house screaming – I am that relieved!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!

  508. THANK YOU. It wasn’t my essay, but someone else’s, but I was making so many corrections and was way too exhausted to attempt another go. Thank you thank you thank you. :)

  509. Thank you for this information, you have saved me from having to re-fill out a job application form that I have spent hours on.

  510. Thank you SO much for this… I can’t begin to express how much your expertise benefited me tonight. You should have a donations link! I seriously would pay you thanks in gratitude!

  511. my file is definitely lost I am so pissed. The worse of it is that when I clicked on it, it gave me 3 options open, save, download and I choose save but it did save anything. I saved it every new changes I made I clicked on save thinking that I was being really careful… I ve been working on this document for weeks and because I was not able to finish it at work I decided to sent it to myself and finish it at home. I added an extra 10 pages and all is gone. I feel like crying but thanks for your help

  512. From all those writing before me all I can say, one more time is THANK YOU! I found your blog tonight after a friend called to say her work was save yet gone…
You know the story and so I won’t repeat the fear, frustration, and wanting to throw the computer across the room. The end is the good part. She followed the steps in your blog and withing a few minutes she sighed in relief. Wish I could give you a hug :0) but THANK YOU again will have to do.
    Be Well
    Reggie

  513. THANK YOU!!!! So happy I managed to find your page, I was ready to throw my computer out the window, and was so not pleased with myself, ususally I’m pretty good with saving papers properly, but this time was just dumb, you totally saved me hours of work that I didn’t want to put back into the paper on a long weekend
    THANKS AGAIN!!!

  514. Hi, thank you very much!!!! This helped me a lot. Was having a crisis and imagining my weekend working on the file all over again. You saved my weekend! Thank you!

  515. You’re a life saver! Thank you so much! This definitely worked and saved me from a world of stress! Thank you again!

  516. 5 hours of work gone! until I found these instructions. I used firefox, and I found my word document was saved directly in the folder you give an address to. Thank you!

  517. NOPE! it did not work for me. I downloaded my word document from gmail using Mozilla Firefox and I have tried all possible options and nothing. Thanks anyways…looks like you have saved many from the hell am going through.

  518. It worked!!!!!!!!!!!! I had written 4 pages of a fiction story I was really proud of and thought they were gone forever and had been putting off re-writing them out of sheer disappointment. I found this and was able to recover the file. You just made my week, you have no idea! :D

  519. This would have been brilliant for me if I hadn’t mucked around with trying to find it before finding this very handy site. Good to know though in case it ever happens to any of my friends. Unfortunately this seems to be a write of passage for uni students as I know a lot of my peers who’ve lost work. Will save from now on.

  520. I wish I had found you at 10 pm last night…..I threw in the towel and went to sleep……came into work resigned to starting from scratch but did one last search and found you!!!!! I volunteer for CASA a non-profit child advocacy organization and I had typed up 80% of a looonngg court report. You have helped more people than you think!

    You are appreciated!

  521. I was too tired to jump up in the air (pretty sleepless night), but I don’t know that I’ve ever been so relieved in my whole life to find my paper, as I had completed it. Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise.

  522. OMG, this so worked, I had spent 3 hours surfing the web trying to find the answer to where my file went, I worked on this thing for 4 hours and was just about to put my finishing touches on it today and to my surprise, I could not find it. Thank God I found this page – I am thanking God and Tech Chutzpah for saving my homework.

  523. Thankyou so much for the information you provide. A silly mistake on part could have cost me hours of precious work, had it not been for the information you provided.

  524. Thank you SO MUCH. I Did not want to redo my work. My old trick used to be (open a different word doc in outlook, save as – then make note of the location or copy the path and find it that way) but it didn’t work on the new computer. But this just saved me a lot of work.

    You are our savior!

  525. I know this post is old, but I can’t thank you enough!!! I was ready to cry and freak out. I have been working on a paper for 11 hours and I thought I lost it all.

  526. The internet is a wonderful thing BUT YOU ARE EVEN BETTER!!!!
Thank you for being a good guy and helping out the rest of us poor overworked students!

  527. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I was so afraid I’d lost the handout for my observationals for my education class and thought I’d have to re-type everything. You are a hero.

  528. *Whew!* Thanks a bunch for this – I *hate* how Word and Excel just close a file that you’ve been working in without warning you that your changes are going to effectively be blown away because it isn’t a real file.

  529. Thank Good I sure did! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Not only did I find what I was looking for following your clear and concise instructions, I was able to restore everything.

3 hours work now saved correctly.

    Thank you again.

  530. Thank God I sure did!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 3 hours work retrieved and saved correctly.

  537. I googled how to find my lost paper and everything was a dead end until i found you! Thank you soooooooo much! I can finally go to sleep!

  538. I’m a college student and this article just saved me three important pages of a 40+ page paper thank you so much!!!

  539. Thanks Tech Chutzpah….You were a lifesaver. I knew it was a temp folder. I was able to see it went there, but had no idea how it got there or how to retrieve it. I found it within a few seconds of checking and unchecking what you said…..I spent a lot of time on this job knowledge quiz and did not want to look through the notes again……

  540. Thank you so much!!! oh my goodness. After tearing up and being very upset because I had searched for about an hour for a project I just did I found this and wanted to cry more once I found this assignment!! thank you for taking the time to write this out for technologically challenged people like myself… and since it is the day after Thanksgiving, it just makes it 100 million times more awesome!! again, I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. As Christmas arises, remember the reason for the season. Jesus loves you!!! And even though I don’t know you,,, I do too!! Thanks again and God bless!!

  541. Thank you for the help :)

I did find another, much easier way to recover these “lost” documents. As long as you know the name under which you saved your file, you can simply go to your folders (“This PC”) and click the “search” tab. There is an option to search for “Other Properties” click that and then click the “Name” option to search for your temporary file by name.

As long as you know the name of the temporary file that was saved, should be a fairly quick and easy recovery.

    Thanks again!

  542. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You’re a lifesaver! I will share this with all my friends! So thankful you shared this!

  543. Thank you so much! These were the only online instructions that actually worked. You just saved me hours of work that I did. THANK YOU!!!

  544. I do thank God for you whoever you are. I KNEW there was a way to access the info but I couldn’t find it and b/c I was beginning to panic my good mind was slowly leaving and I would never regain my composure enough to figure it out. Thanks for the guide. I sooooo appreciate it as does my daughter (I was returning her edited college English final). Just a note to Firefox users, if like me you’re using a Windows based product for email use the IE line of text that this lovely person provided in Step 3. MUAH…MUAH…MUAH

  545. this didn’t help me recover my file because i had already tried reopening it from my email, but now i know how to avoid zombie files in the future and i know that if i lose a document from firefox not to reopen that email :)

  546. OMG MY FINAL ASSIGNMENT EVER IN ECONOMICS UNDERGRAD which took hours and i’m about to graduate AND I FOUND MY EXCEL FILE WITH YOUR STEPS…please have my babies

  547. after searching entire documents & computer & “throwing the rattle out of the pram scenario”, about to smash my lap top up the wall, frightening my MUCH LOVED dog & visiting a closed pc world on sat p.m. to no avail, I found you! Pure God like Genius.. thank you soooooo much.. Lost & now found assignment due in tomorrow..THANK YOUXXX
PS. HAVE APOLOGISED TO THE POOCH!

  548. Govind Gadiyar
I was able to retrieve a back-up version of my word file and it saved me the frustration of re-typing. Thank You!

  549. I was so hoping this would work for my co-worker. She opened a file with a link. I tested it doing the same thing and I was able to make it work. But she had shut off her computer (in sadness) and on re-start she tried this, but the files were not there. This is a great recipe anyway and I’ll be sure to share it with my team. The number of posts you have is amazing. This could definitely have saved me before if only I’d taken the time to try and surf to it. Thanks for keeping this post alive.

  550. I wish I had found this article earlier. After my document was lost, I spent over an hour searching everywhere on my computer and came up with nothing. After reading this, and following the simple instructions, i recovered the lost document in about 10 minutes.

    Thanks!

  551. Hi from Singapore! You have also helped me with this article! You have a drink waiting for you when you come over to our sunny island :)

  552. Thank you for this post – you have saved my job application due at 8am tomorrow morning. A million thanks. Fantastic post.

  553. So after reading step 1 my heart absolutely sank because (like a total idiot) I already tried to open the file again from downloads and it has now overwritten all the changes I made (hours worth of work!) Please please tell me there is a way of undoing this or somewhere else I might be able to find my work WITH the changes I made? Any help would be so very much appreciated!

  554. YOU have helped me save my Powerpoint for school!!!! Just in the nick of time, my 12 slide, 8 hrs of hard work and research document has been RETREIVED!!!!! I did this over the phone as I was at work and my hubby was at home! YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

  555. Thank you! My daughter sent me a WORD doc which contained info off her website to edit. I “opened” it, we talked and edited it ALLOT, then I lost it…until I found your post. We were so upset at first as we had spent allot of time and thought it was all wasted. We were also frustrated trying to recreate it with the exact wording we had settled on. BTW, I found the lost file by step #3. I had already tried several suggestions on other websites before I found your post. Thank you!!

  556. Just saved me hours of work. Wasn’t expecting this to actually help, but wow. I literally jumped into the air and shouted in the middle of my office in relief. Thank you!

  557. Looks like it works well, but doesn’t help me as i opened the document in Microsoft Office Outlook (in Vista). Typing in the IE thing obviously doesn’t help. How is it that no-one had this problem?

  558. Just wanted to add my thanks to this thread of utter gratitude. Was so pleased to be able to find the file and so quickly at that. Your instructions are superb — thank you so much for taking the time to write them out for the rest of us!

  559. thanyou thankyou thankou thankyou thankyouuuuuuuuuuu thakyou thankyou thankyou thankyou so much. it was for my thesis 😀

  560. Thank you so much. 3 weeks of work for our science fair project was almost deleted. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  561. LIFE SAVER! I had a doc I was working on for 3 hours brought back to life by you, you wonderful person! May all the good things happen to you!

  562. I just realised that the comment list was endless and I saw your update in 2012 saying that you had helped saving 14 documents. Well, I have to say that thanks to your instructions I have probably saved a similar amount of documents. In fact, I have a shortcut in my desktop to this page because I keep making the same mistake again and again. So I owe you big time!

  563. Thank you so MUCH! You have helped me enormously and if I can understand your instructions, then you have done a great job. thanks again.

  564. Words cant thank you enough, Sir. You saved my 2 hours of effort. I had written so much on an excel and could not imagine writing all that technical infromation again. this website came like an oasis in a desert. :)

  565. I felt sure that I would find my daughter’s document using these steps above (it was lost from when she was working off of it in an email and did not save it)…. but to no avail. We didn’t realize it wasn’t saved until 24 hours had already passed.
Luckily, after 2 hrs of fretting… I tried right clicking within the white area of all the folders –
    – clicked “customize this folder” in the popup window
    – clicked the “previous versions” tab
    – and I FOUND FOLDERS THAT WENT BACK 2 MONTHS!! :) Recovered the document and all is right in the world!
Thanks so much for this info!!

  566. I am so appreciative. This worked and saved me having to retype an assignment that just took me 8 hours to finish! Thank you thank you thank you!!! Now I can enjoy the rest of my weekend.

  567. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!! Your directions are such a blessing. Thank you for caring enough about others to share this info!!

  568. Thank you so much, I love you!!!! I thought I lost an assignment I spent 5 hours on due tomorrow omg god bless your soul

  569. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I realized I had opened my 8 page essay in hotmail and didnt click save on it…. when I got my mom to edit it (yes lol) she didnt click ‘save as’ she just kept clicking save! THANK YOU A 100XXXX THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

  570. Thank you so much! Had worked for hours on a presentation and was starting to panic it was lost forever until you showed me how to recover the file.

  571. I have a variation of this problem that I hope you can help with. I opened a file from my email and then did a Save As and saved it under a new name. The Save As file is no where to be found. I have looked in my temporary IE folders to no avail?

  572. You have saved my coursework, massive amounts of stress and an awful lot of typing. Sincerely, thank you so much.

  573. YOU. ARE. THE. BEST. I was thiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to going Hulk on my house after losing a VERY important presentation to be presented in 8 hours time which took me two weeks to put together (research, interviews, reading, etc.). You saved me! Thank you so so so much!!!

  574. This just saved my life! I know everyone else is saying it too, but this just calmed what could have been a bad panic attack!

  575. Al xamdulillah, thank u so much brother u cant imagine how am relieved when i found my losted document after following ur steps
    thanks a bunch

  576. THANK YOU OMG LORD JESUS YOU ARE A SAVIOR- I BASICALLY JUST DIED AND CAME BACK TO LIFE, THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO MUCH

  577. Yay, you allowed me to get sleep before I have to wake up in less than four hours to drive an hour away and present on this little amount of sleep and last until 4:15 at which point I have to drive another hour back home.

  578. I use Chrome. I opened a file using Windows Mail. I lost it. Tried to follow these instructions but it is not working.

  579. Fire Fox download and I worked on it for HOURS I kept saving but it was in zombie land as you said. %userprofile%\AppData\Local\temp in Fire Fox found the folders I arranged by date modified and it was in the second folder.

Thank you this is a great tip and it should be spread out wider

  580. You and I are my son’s hero! Grade 10 English book report retrieved after Six hours of editing….👍

  581. Thank you so much!! After spending all day working on several documents that I had opened via email and then ‘saved’, I could not believe it when they all seemed to have disappeared and I was left with the unworked on originals! I felt like weeping and ripping my hair out! Anyway thanks to your well written and clear instructions the documents have been recovered and saved to the desk top. You are truly a lifesaver-or rather a sanity saver!!
    Many thanks!!!

  582. Hello Oded… I just posted a comment here but that’s lost too :D May be cos I hadn’t logged on using any of the icons. First off, thanks for the great job you’re doing here with saving so many people’s lives :) As of now, I find myself in that really small group to whom you have offered your sympathies :) To list my problem: I have committed the crime of opening up an excel attachment from an email and working on it for a whole day and not saving it. And then, it closed on me and now i have no clue where it is. So I went back to that email and opened it up again and I saw the excel attachment bearing the extension (2) after the file name, which meant that (1) was stored somewhere on my system. I tried searching whole day today with the file name (1) and with certain keywords i had used in the document, but to no luck. I work on Windows 8.1 and use Chrome. Would you be able to help me find (1)? :) Fingers crossed :) and thank you in advance!!

  583. OMG, I am literally on the verge of tears. I have had the worst week and I had a presentation to make that I was working on all week due tomorrow. So I emailed it to myself and worked on it at home and had a home run…until I hit “save” and closed the doc. I immediately knew I was screwed. There was no panic, just numbness and despair. You are a freakin genius and I love you! You absolutely saved me from so much embarrassment and depression.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  584. Thank you SOOOOOO MUCH! I had a rough day, decided it was time for a new job, ordered pizza for the kids, spent the evening writing and perfecting my resume. AND BOOM GONE. I was sooooooooooooooo sad and depressed, like really, can this day get any worse. Thank you so much. I am going to write you back when I get the job, (I was convinced that it was an omen like I was going to keep my current job, but now I feel differently, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! (This was the only one I found that actually worked mind you) One thing, I kept making the mistake of CTRL + ALT + whatever, after I realized my error, no problem

  585. OMG. I’ve had to use this post TWICE already this year!! I should’ve commented the first time, but this time I really would have had a nervous breakdown if not for you and this advice!! Add me to people who owe you a drink!! Thank you!!

  586. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know better and still opened an attachment instead of saving it. You are a wonderful person!

  587. THANK YOU! You just saved me a ton of heartache and a sleepless night. Can go to bed now without having an anxiety attack that 5+ hours of work were wasted.

  588. Thank you immensely for saving me from a very long night…I wish you many blessings for sharing this technique with all of us… You are appreciated!

  589. WOW! You have saved me from doing my project over again!! Thank goodness!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  590. Thank you SO much!!!!! I had lost my work which had taken me weeks to do, and I thought I would have to do the whole thing again! You have saved me from a three day deadline! I cannot tell you how thankful I am that you put this guide on here!!!

  591. I worked six hours, adding four pages to two previously saved pages in a Word document on a flash drive. Since it was at 4:00 a.m., evidently, I didn’t click replace old with new, so I was back to 2 pages, when I tried to e-mail the fiinshed Word document. Any ideas for me?

  592. OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU ARE A LIFESAVER. You have no idea how happy I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =D

  593. Thanks you! Like everyone else, this tutorial saved me. I looked in the temporary files originally, but didn’t see it where I thought to look, but the added step of search by date modified, show hidden files, kept me scrolling and looking for the folder, not the file I was working on all helped. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  594. I OWE YOU 24 HOURS OF MY LIFE!!!
If you’re ever in Liverpool, UK, email me – I’ll buy you a bottle of champagne!
One comment though, it didn’t work straight away for me. I had to re-copy and paste step 3 AFTER I’d shown hidden files.
But mate, you have saved my life! :o)

  595. Thank you so much for this wonderful tip! I was able to recover a lost presentation which took hours to build. Can’t thank enough!

  596. You are a life saver!!! thank you a million times over!!!! You made it so easy too!

    THANK YOU!!!

  597. Thank you!!!! I collaborated on a document with six of my colleagues that I had opened from an email attachment and recorded all edits for the group. I thought the four hours of work was lost forever and couldn’t imagine how I was going to tell the group that it was not properly saved. Thanks to your clear instructions all the work was recovered!!

  598. Thank you soooo much….having got over the heart attack of thinking I’d lost all my hard work, I have now found and SAVED it in my documents….I will never do this again!

  599. I made a lot of changes to an excel doc I downloaded via Firefox from an educational website and then changed the name and hit save (to my desktop, I thought). I am using Windows 7.
Next day I could not find it anywhere.

I saved another file from the same place to see where it went and saw the \AppData\Local\temp line but could not get there no matter what I tried.
So I googled and found this article.

All I had to do was use this one piece of info from the article:
“If this happened to you when using Firefox, please use this line instead: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\temp”.

I typed as directed in the Search box and the temp file opened and there was my file. I dragged it to the desktop and and it opened fine.
    Thanks a bunch!!

  600. You are awesome! Thank you, thank you, thank you! One note regarding your step #1: Most importantly, do not try to re-open the file from your email. If you have done so already, you may have overwritten your file. You’ll know soon enough. Unfortunately I had done that, so when I found the file, it was not the version I was looking for. However, there were four files with today’s date and I found it in an earlier file. Maybe you could add a note to others so they don’t stop after they find they open the document and its not the right one. Once again, thank you so much!

  601. THANK YOU! I had exhausted all search efforts and thought I’d give it one more try with your instructions and the file has been found. Hours of work recovered. I can’t thank you enough.

  602. Thank you so much! I had exhausted all efforts to find my file. Then, I decided to give your instructions a try. GOT THE FILE. Thanks again.

  603. 4 hours and 36 pages later and constantly saving; shut down suddenly and just disappeared. You just saved me from a terrible night. Namaste.

  604. I opened a word doc in my outlook email. Hit the save button but never the save as button….. closed word and it vanished. There went my 10-pg final exam research paper. I found it with your directions!!! Thank yo so much!!!!!

  605. You just saved me six hours of re-editing my novel (with hopefully the exact same words)! Thanks so much.

  606. I am very grateful. This is not the first time I’ve been so stupid as to work from an attachment and I’ve tried following the steps given in other websites but this is the easiest. I found it through looking in through all the temp folders not just the first one I came across, if that’s helpful to anyone.

  607. You are the best Saved me from hours of work and a very terrible day. you are the best person on the internet i have ever-met. Actually someone is useful and helpful on the internet. All the Idiots here owe you big time for this.

  608. You’re amazing! Gosh nearly cried thinking of spending my day on SATURDAY NIGHT no less at UNI finishing an assignment to have to lose it!! THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

  609. You have just saved my behind!!! Thanks so much for your step-by-step help, it was easy to follow and I found my lost document in a matter of minutes! Made my day!

  610. Thank you very much this is the 3rd time this happen to me. The last time I got lucky and some how it I found it. This time I could not find it anywhere even through search. I decided to search google for answer and I found you. Thank God for your genius and knowledge. I have many other things to do did not have time to redo my data.

  611. Phew!
Saved a heap of trouble for my wife.
Really good clear description on how to go about it all – THANK YOU and a free beer to you if you ever come to Tasmania, Australia. :-)

  612. You will not believe how grateful I am for this. I can’t tell you how many flippin times Ive lost work this way! So I was so pleased to find the work that id spend pretty much all of last night doing!!! AMAZING! Thank you so much!

  613. Unfortunately I have restarted the machine before following the mentioned steps. Now I followed the steps which are mentioned but I am not able to find the file. Can you help me out in this case?

    Thanks.
    -Vinoth
    6126664440.

  614. Thank you so much!! I kept saving so I thought I was fine. Hours of work would have been lost. Thank you for taking the time to post this!! So happy to have my work back.

  615. Thank you! Very much appreciate it. I was so upset. Will make sure I don’t make that mistake again. Kept thinking I was ok as I kept saving it. Very grateful. Thank you!

  616. WOW! You have saved me yet again from opening files from my email. I MUST save instead of open next time. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!

  617. Ok…you have made a 16 year old boy who spent a lot of time on his essay very happy…thank you!!! You saved the day!

  618. Seeing how you are monitoring comment stats; I thought I would let you know that this post saved a panicked teenage college girls grade – as she already used the “lost my homework” excuse the first time her essay disappeared because she opened in IE instead of saving. I thank you immensely!

  619. I thought all was lost. Total disbelief turned to tears of frustration as the realisation that weeks of work had vanished. Then I found your site. I am eternally grateful! I have most definitely learnt my lesson! Thank you, you are an ANGEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  620. i must be the only one who can’t my document! the files look weird and when I open a file that is Word its all symbols! what am I doing wrong here?! HELP!

  621. OMGGGG. Thank god for this. Was writing my reflections for 2015 and when i edited the doc from my email could not find the document. It was 8 pages long and summarised my life in 2015. Thank you so much for this brilliant solution! Found my word doc again. So grateful for this. I was on the verge of tear. Fell elated now. Thank you once again.

  622. Absolutely amazing i used Paul’s method to get into my windows 10 temp file. Then went into search by date order and “bob’s your uncle” there it was!!!! I had wanted to cry. I was correcting my daughter’s research paper finished it saved it and could not find it. Thanks a million,

  623. This didn’t work. I actually typed the whole thing up on Word, I repeatedly saved it while i was typing it and again when i was finished. I went to email it to myself, and while i was looking for the file to attach it, i couldn’t find it. So i was like “Oh, it’s probably not there because it’s still open.” So i closed word and saved it again, and when i went to email it to myself it was still gone. i tried looking for it again, and i still can’t find it. even after i did what you said on this page, all i could find were random things in computer language.

    email me at coopersushi@yahoo.com
if you have the solution, thank you.

  624. Normally, these things don’t work for me but this one did! You saved me 2 hours worth of re-doing my work! Thank you so much!!!

  625. OMG thank you so much, I had worked at this for hours and I cannot thank you enough for helping me to find it. Will never make that mistake again!! Thank you!!!!!

  626. Thank you!! I was able to retrieve an Excel file my wife had labored on for hours to track insurance payments toward my cancer treatment. She was in tears when it appeared lost. The spreadsheet was waiting for me at the end of your steps.

  627. THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR!!! <3
YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH !
AHHHH THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU, YOU SAVED ME :DDD

  628. You’re amazing. If you turned my coke into wine I wouldnt be surprised. My final exam paper, my heart fell – five hours work lost. The firefox option works great. I did everything you said and everything happened as you predicted – exactly – but still couldnt find it – then I did save as in the last version and all the files came up THANK YOU THANK YOU. Your my hero.

  629. Thank you so much!!! I thought I was loosing my mind! Your instructions were concise and easily followed!!! <3

  630. Super star! Your method didn’t 100% work for me but it did help me get to the right folder. Thanks!

  631. Thank you very much.. I could easily recover my excel edited directly on outlook. Thank you very much

  632. You have become one of my heroes if there were more people like you in this world what a place it would be. May blessings follow you and opportunitities open up for you throughout your whole life. Thank you. You have made a wonderful difference.

  633. You just helped me recover my final paper that was at 11 pages and counting. I do not know if there is a human being I appreciate more than you sir. Never one to comment on things on the internet, but this saved me from such a terrible night that there is no way I wouldn’t chime in here. Any decent grade that I get on this paper is being attributed to you, gratzi!

  634. Amazing, I was holding the tears in, thinking there are worse things in life, like dying or getting sacked from my job in two days if I do not get this paperwork retyped up. I had the whole dialogue in my head of what to say to my boss… Now I am saved – by YOU. You are worth every breath you take. The fact that you bothered to spend the time to tell others when you did not have to!!!!!!

Thank you so much, you are a great teacher; it was really easy to understand your steps (I am a working mother who needs things said in layman terms by her children usually and I did this myself!)

    Now I will sleep…

  635. Look, you guys saved my behind! I retrieved my very important PowerPoint for a group project in no time! I have no idea what I would’ve done since it’s due tomorrow, and needed to be reviewed by another group member (which takes a lot of time). Thank you soooo much!!!!

  636. please please help me, I tried step 3 , when I copied paste first link there was nothing and I tried another there is so many folders but then how to use fourth step?where I can enter ctrl+t . no idea please help me. Thanks in advance

  637. I just have to say a big thank you, if there were not for you I would have lost 5 hours of my work . Thank you a lot !!!

  639. OMG – you’ve literally just saved my life! Huge delivery to client tomorrow which now may actually happen – phew!

  640. Thank you so much for sharing this. I found other MS and Google official links, but those failed to answer for what happened in this case. Your description and steps to retrieve the lost file were spot on and saved my few hours work! Thanks a million.

  641. I searched the internet for help with this terrible problem and your post was the only one that worked. I am so grateful! Thank you.

  642. Almost had a small melt down but I finally found it. I also had to back track and search through quite a bit but I finally found it!!! Thank you so very very much!!!

  643. I LOVE YOU! I JUST HAVE TEARS OF GRATEFULNESS AND BLESSEDNESS RUNNING DOWN MY FACE!! I REALLY THOUGHT AFTER ALL THIS I WOULD BREAK DOWN COMPLETELY AND I HAD NO FAITH IN THAT MY PROBLEM IS THE SAME, AND IT WORKED. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH!!

  644. WOW! I have done many google searches to get help on computers, and this was by far the best and easiest to use!! NOT TO MENTION IT WORKED! Within 4 mins I had my file back. I was freaking out, because I have stayed up all night building a spreadsheet for work…Literally entering information from last year to current, and I was so proud of the results. This would have been heart breaking to lose. Thank you so much for sharing your post! I would have never thought opening an attachment from an email would have done this, bc I do it all the time at work! 649. Thank you soooo much! The Fire fox option worked. Just to let you know as soon as I pasted the fire fox link into my search the files all appeared. I didn’t have to use the ALT + T function.

  650. Hi Thank you very much for your help. I was about to start 3 hours of work all over again – was going to be a very long night!!! Thanks again.

  651. Please HELP. About 2:30 pm Wednesday I sent a draft Word docx to my attorney as an attachment in an E-mail from Outlook, clicked on attachment after to confirm what I sent , didn’t close it, and that night when I came back to keep working on it, saw it opened on my screen, not realizing it was the attachment and worked on it 10 hours throughout the whole night on a research project, save, save, save, saving every 5, 10 minutes. By 6:00 AM Thursday, hardly awake, I saved and went to send the final version off to my attorney. I remember seeing the E-mail sent 2:30 PM the day before still on the screen, closed it, heard a beep like a prompt, but noticed nothing else until suddenly I can’t find my finished Word docx. It is not in Word, it is not listed as a recently opened document. It has simply vanished. Unable to believe my eyes, I panicked and I quickly reopened the attachment from 2:30 PM. Then I find this wonderful post, but not soon enough. I am one of the ones who are not lucky. I did this but found nothing. Is there any hope for me? An Outlook recovery tool? Maybe?

  652. Thank you so very much! You just saved me 5 and a half hour for my NVQ work. I was ready to cry as this has happened before. I believe you are actually God in human form :)

  663. Thank you so much for the ditailed advice! I had this problem on the attachment that I opened in Mozilla Thunderbird, pressed save (F12) in the opened file and then edited and then it was lost. And I even opened the original attachment to see if my own text was there or not. However, I found my own edited version through this process! I am not so skilled with computers, but the instruction was so clear I could make it. Thanks a lot!

I couldn’t find the “Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5” at the “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\” directory.

So I instead browsed to “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\” and there I searched for the file extension to find my file.
